Did I just use a Jane Austen book as a coaster for my overly frothed cappuccino? Blasphemy! But honestly, while Austen’s world may have preferred tea, coffee was around in England in her time. Just saying. 🤷🏻‍♀️ #janeausten #chawtonhouse by @thatmetroreader

I started Heart the Lover by Lily King, on the Metro today. Even the large German Shepherd and the lanky handler who boarded the train with me, didn’t distract me from the novel which took off from the word Go. It’s a YA novel but has such an universal appeal. #heartthelover #lilyking #instareaders by @thatmetroreader

A Saturday at my favourite store (guess where) and a new coffee place - Harley’s - where I positioned my kindle next to the coffee cup only to say that I’ve read this book - The Song of Achilles - and absolutely LOVED IT! Read it, pronto! by @thatmetroreader

I have started on this lovely book - Elizabeth Strout’s The Things We Never Say. Its theme is loneliness which ironically the book explores through an immensely popular high school teacher. Strangely, the other book (688 page long and I mention this only because it’s been a while since I read a novel this long) I finished recently - The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny - also explores how loneliness shape shifts between age groups, geographies, genders, circumstances. I loved it for its fascinating character arcs as well as the sheer sweep of locales - from the US and Mexico to Italy and India. Unputdownable!

Two romances which I loved recently, both set in India.
Madhulika Liddle’s For the Love of Apricots is a delightful romance set in Uttarakhand’s apricot-growing hills. The heroine is imperfect - eccentric, curmudgeonly, opinionated, but so loveable. The backdrop is the apricot farms and apricot jams and chutneys being made in the women’s collective kitchen. By the end all I wanted was a slice of golden toast with apricot jam lavishly spread on it!
On the other hand, Radhika Agrawal’s Red Flags and Rishtas is a fun, witty, romance set in Delhi’s familiar world of weddings and event management, and dating sites. The language is very on point, relatable, and the story is super fun. Such lovely reads, both!

I love to see Ganpati idols slowly make their way to homes and pandals in the city. But less than pleasant is the dismal traffic logjams the jubilant homecomings create. The cops need to get creative - maybe have fixed timings for Ganpati movement? He’s a VIP after all and must reach his destination fast. 😊 by @thatmetroreader

Hell yeah! Two books read over the weekend (admittedly light reads) and 4 queued up on my Kindle. As the stations sped by, I started on The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny by Kiran Desai.

The foldable, mini umbrella - an additional accessory on my Metro rides these days, apart from my kindle. (The Metro doesn’t leak am happy to report, it’s for when I step out of the station). 😊
Many moons ago I read ‘Chasing the Monsoon’ by Alexander Frater - an immensely interesting history of India’s monsoons. Do read it if you find India’s annual tryst with this amazing weather phenomenon as riveting as i do!

With students protesting across cities in India for their right to a fair education system - literally the key to their future - I picked up William Dalrymple’s The Golden Road which talks about how ancient India transformed the world across art, religion, culture, and learning. He underlines not just India’s contributions like the zero, but also accounts of Chinese travellers who visited Nalanda and other centres of learning where thousands of monks studied diligently - where acquisition of knowledge was sacred.
How far have we fallen that today our students have to agitate on the streets of India’s cities to demand accountability for a fair and glitch-free university admission testing. History can teach us so much - not for jingoistic sabre-rattling, but to show us that greatness can be replicated albeit when preceded by accountability and integrity.
This is my current read -it’s not on my kindle but the charm of a physical book never fades, does it? #williamdalrymple #thegoldenroad by @thatmetroreader
