🌌THE ABYSS:Sat. 6/22 @ 10pm-3am🌌 THE ABYSS: A HOUSE DANCE EXPERIENCE The ABYSS, presented by Urban Artistry, Inc., is more than a competition, it's a celebration of the human spirit, the dancefloor, and the culture that connects us. Rooted in the traditions of House Dance, The ABYSS honors cypher participation and the power of movement as a form of expression, healing, and release. Whether you’re coming to test your skills in the Final Cypher Session (11PM–12AM), vibe as a spectator, or just lose yourself in the music and let the week go, this experience is for you. Part of the International Soul Society Festival, The ABYSS creates a space for honesty, integrity, and fearless self-discovery open to all who respect the floor and come ready to move. Selectors: DJ Pope, DJ Novakane Omega, DJ Nedda Sou & DJ Philippe The Haitian Vocalist: Ed Ramsey Percussion: AmaKweku Cultural Arts PRE-SELECTION: Doors 10pm. Pre-selection starts at 11:00 PM. The pre-selection round will consist of 1-on-1 showcases, with each participant getting one, un-timed run. Both dancers, one dancer, or neither dancer will advance. An Advisory Committee, made up of the event organizers and House Dance professionals, will choose at least 12 dancers to advance to the final cypher session. THE FINAL CYPHER SESSION: The cypher session will be a one-hour cypher of uninterrupted exchanges between the chosen dozen from pre-selection. JUDGING: The 12+ finalists will choose a winner amongst themselves. Each dancer will have one vote, but cannot vote for themselves. The dancer with a majority of the votes will be the winner. Brickhouse is an internationally recognized scholar practitioner dedicated to the sustainability of Urban Dance Cultures with over 30 years experience in over 60 countries. As researcher, public folklorist, cultural ambassador, mentor, and logistician, Junious currently serves as Director of Next Level, NCTA Board Member, Co-Chair of AFS’ CDC, and Founding ED of Urban Artistry, Inc (2005). 🎤🤝👟 PASS THE MIC: Codes, Cultures & Ways of Being // Thur. 10/8 @ 7pm 👟🤝🎤 -A Community Town Hall- Every groove, every style, and every rule we follow in the circle was handed to us by somebody who carried it before we got here. As our scenes grow and our eyes turn toward the present and the future, it's worth pausing together to talk about where each of our cultures comes from and the principles that made us who we are. Those principles are more than history. They are ways of being, and when we understand them, they keep us aligned with our own traditions, with each other, and with the people who opened the door for us. Pass the Mic brings crew leaders and members from across the DMV's many dance communities into that conversation. This isn't a battle and it isn't a showcase. This is the first Volume that features a world-renowned DJ, Graphic Designer, and Curator ... the one and only DJ Underdog! Celebrating the American Folklife Center’s 50th Anniversary, Urban Artistry presents highlights of DJ Underdog's Interview that is currently housed within The Library of Congress' Digital Collections. In 2022, Urban Artistry, Inc. received a Community Collections Grant from the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress to launch "Follow the Music: Exploring the Multi-Linear Legacies of House Culture."
