I said if he followed me home, I’d have no choice… šŸ”

Seeing a cat look this lost is always a sign to act quickly. While a part of me was hoping he’d take a turn off onto a side street or confidently slip into the backyards, I am so relieved he’s indoors where he needs to be. I have a special tenderness for cats that show up at my very first TNR’d colony (where my bottle baby Pino was found!), and feel honored to be entrusted by their feeders with even a small part of their care.

A quick side note: right now, @brooklynanimalaction is closed for intake, which means I’m shouldering the expenses of vetting any new cats until their adoption fees come in. If you’re able to support with cat food, cash donations, or even kind words and shares for the adoptable cats on my page, please know that every single gesture is appreciated!! 🫶 taken in Brooklyn, New York by @thatsagoodcat

Tamagotchi is a gem of a cat!! šŸ’Ž

She is spunky, sweet, hilarious, playful, snuggly, and creative. She can hang with older cats, younger cats, and any human—whether she’s met them before or not. (She’s a hit at game nights!)

Unfortunately, due to no fault of her own, Tamagotchi was returned to us after being adopted as a solo cat. She made it clear she needs another cat in the household, and becomes anxious and vocal without another cat around. So we are seeking a home *with another cat* for our Gotchi girl.

Tamagotchi passed her annual exam with flying colors—proof that FIV+ cats can be just as healthy and sweet as FIV- cats. We know her people and cat sibling are out there. But we need your help finding them!!

šŸ‘¾ Apply to adopt Tamagotchi via the link in our bio and on our website, and list Nora as the rescuer! taken in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn by @thatsagoodcat

In a Crown Heights backyard, mama cat Marimekko had at least three litters in the span of a year. 😭

We TNR’d all her older kittens, but she remained evasive.

It’s heartbreaking to see a familiar feral cat show up pregnant, then disappear, only to come back several pounds lighter. We never want to trap a mama cat if she has kittens somewhere unknown, so it became a waiting game…

Sure enough, 9-10 weeks later, she brought four kittens to the backyard. Her caretakers set a plan in place to trap mama, then all four babies, after getting TNR certified themselves!

We truly got them just in time, as even 2-3 more weeks would have had them well outside the easily specializable window. It took care and patience to convince this crew to come around on pets, treats and playtime, but now Pipo, Takki, Sokka, and Suki are sweet, playful, cuddly, and ready for their forever homes!

At 5mo old, they can be adopted in pairs or to a home with another playful cat. They are great with kids, and will become your best friends in no time. Full bios on Petfinder!

To adopt any of these four, put in an application (link in bio) and list Nora as the rescuer! šŸ’› taken in Crown Heights, Brookln by @thatsagoodcat

🐾 Patchouli needs a new home! 🐾

Long before the heat and smoke of summer, when the ground was frozen and days were shorter, Patchouli showed up to a feeding spot. Unneutered and cautious, this king of mixed signals trotted right up for food and into a trap just before another snowstorm hit. ā„ļø

Thanks to his incredibly dedicated foster @foster.cookies, Patchouli has made massive strides to build trust and accept love—and now, with his wonderful foster leaving for travels of her own, he’s ready to make the leap to a new foster or adoptive home where he can continue to feel confident and secure. Patchou needs a patient person who can keep pace with him and help him build that trust, but is ready to meet you with headbutts and chirps once he gets to know you. He loves silvervine twigs and treats, and is great with other cats! 🧔

If you’re ready to open your home to this little teddy bear of a boy, apply to foster or adopt via the link in our bio or on our website, listing Patchouli as the cat and Nora as his rescuer 🧸

We’re hitting 99 in NYC, but the cats gotta eat! šŸ”„

Summertime tips for caring for your neighborhood cats:
šŸ’§ Put out plenty of fresh water in a wide dish
šŸ½ļø Provide wet food, ideally served fresh when the cats are there, for extra hydration
ā›±ļø Put food bowls and shelters in a shady location
šŸ For your friendlies, try a frozen Churu or squeezy treat for a refreshing socialization session!

If you want to support my weekly cat feeding efforts, drop a comment and I’ll DM how you can support (from indoors, even). And let me know if you want to learn more about any of these guys. 😘

Stay safe out there, everyone!

Zeppelin! šŸš€

Wayyyy back in the dead of February, as I came home from shoveling feet of snow, my cat vision activated: I saw a gray and white flash leaping through the snow across from my place. My heart sank. Another cat out in the cold—one I didn’t recognize. I didn’t see him again. šŸ˜–

It wasn’t until I was chatting with my neighbor, Linda, months later that I learned this guy had become a regular on the block, chased off by the biggest local cats but continuing to show up for 4am breakfast. So out I went in mid-May, with a box trap and a dream, and back I came with Zeppelin.

Zeppy wasn’t an easy sell. He was hungry, skinny, and his coat was thinning. The winter hadn’t been kind to him, nor had the bigger, neutered cats on the block. His teeth were bad, diseased and clearly causing him pain. He took churu with equal parts enthusiasm and grumbles. He didn’t seek out pets. He was confused and terrified. 🩵

To be completely honest, I was almost ready to TNR him, due to lack of space and his mixed signals. But when @lizzies.street.cat.club offered to put him up for a week in a playpen to buy some time for us to seek out dental care for him, Zeppy got the miracle he needed. In the playpen, he finally began to unwind. He leaned in for pets for the first time, shared a Churu with another cat, and started his journey toward trust.

Now, Zeppy is back with me for a short stay. He is clearly not a feral cat born on the street, but an indoor cat whose trust has been bent, though not fully broken. He’s a goofball who winds around my feet before meals and headbutts for attention. His grave little face is just a front—he’s a lap cat in the making. 🄰

In the thick of kitten season, cats like Zeppy often get sidelined. But the joy that is watching a 5yr old cat give elevator butt and learn to love again is unparalleled. Soon, Zep will get dental surgery and be ready for adoption!

A polyp the size of a raspberry šŸ“šŸ™€

We are so relieved that despite many false starts trying to trap Imelda May, she was brought inside for life-saving surgery last month. We could from looking at her that tell she was struggling to eat, losing weight, and that the disease had reached her nose and throat—all signs of progressive dental disease—but I never would have imagined the polyp plot twist.

Thanks to @bbawcrescueclinic, Imelda May got relief, and the signs that she was more comfortable were nearly instantaneous. Now a toothless muppet, Imelda is sleeping comfortably and beginning to show her playful side! šŸŽŠ

We are still fundraising around $250 more to cover her care, and are looking for a patient longterm foster who can help her come around to this indoor life.

Please share Imelda’s story and contribute if you can! Thanks to all those who have championed her so far. šŸ„¹šŸ„‡

This Divine trio are ready (more than ready!) for adoption!! You’ve seen them grow up with us, now you can call them yours!

Fingers crossed that Egg Man has a potential home lined up with another young cat for him to befriend, but we’d LOVE to find Edie & Mink a home together?!

We’re also looking for a new foster for the two of them so we can lighten the load for foster mom @jennyleighmayer! She’s done such an amazing job getting them to this point, now someone else gets to enjoy these uber sweet and mushy babies!

See the link in our bio for the foster and adoption applications! We can’t wait to hear from you 🄰

How’d she look so bad so fast? šŸ’˜

Imelda May was trapped, neutered, and returned a year ago by another rescue org. While she looked healthy from the curb, she started visibly deteriorating over the summer and fall, and by winter, we knew we needed to get her inside.

Of course, that’s easier said than done for a cat who knows a trap and gets fed by multiple caring neighbors, many of whom noted she wasn’t looking so hot… 🫠

With a case like Imelda’s, we had to spend money before learning the extent of all she had going on. She came in snotty, with crunchy breathing and some alarming weight loss, all as a result of (you might’ve guessed from the video) SEVERE dental disease.

Donate and we’ll tell you what we found out after popping open the hood! šŸ¦·āš™ļøšŸ¦

This time last year we set out to trap Old Man Jenkins, a regular at @thatsagoodcat’s feeding spot, as it was clear they were having severe dental pain. We suspected he was a male as he wasn’t been ear tipped but had never been seen to be pregnant throughout the years Nora had been feeding there. Much to our surprise, Old Man Jenkins turned out to be an already spayed female! The fact she had been spayed and not ear tipped lead us to believe that she once had a home, with someone that loved her enough to get her fixed. But she’d been out here for many many years at this point. Her mouth was a mess, incredibly inflamed, potentially cancerous. We were told we could humanely euthanize her and it wouldn’t be the wrong decision, or we could try a two week course of antibiotics to see how her mouth looks after that and go from there. We, the suckers that we are, of course chose the latter option. Now dubbed Billie Jean King came to live at @danaandthecats’s place for what we thought would be her final 2 weeks earth side. But baby girl bounced back, and at her recheck she got what remained of her teeth removed and got the all clear health wise! She was shy to touch, as her time outside had cautioned her to be distrustful of humans. After a stint in foster with @onunez513 where we learnt so much more about her spunky personality, she went to live with @sk.kitties. We were all nervous as SK’s cat Jade was famously, a decisively solo girl, but we were all delightfully surprised to see that Jade was happy to open her heart to exactly one cat, and that is Billie Jean King. After a short lived trial adoption in another home, it was clear that once BJK returned to SK and Jade that she was officially home 🄹 We are so proud of this amazing girl, and while she is still not so into being pet, she is SO into this retirement chapter! We love you BJK! taken in Brooklyn, New York by @thatsagoodcat

Sometimes, the clues are right there šŸ’”

I come to you not with a rant about how ā€œpeople suckā€ or rage bait about abandoned pets. Instead, I come to you with a plea for empathy and action when it comes to preventing cats like Donovan from ending up in danger on the street. Here we go:

My heart goes out to anyone who takes on a ā€œfreeā€ cat and then faces the astronomical costs of vetting them once they hit maturity. I’ve had neighbors tell me they were quoted $850-$1200 for a routine spay or neuter appointment. Living with a cat who’s not spayed or neutered is not an easy thing (spraying, howling, odors, etc). As rescuers, we all understand how someone can reach the point of feeling unable to keep a cat.

The city shelter system is built to absorb surrendered pets, vetting and rehoming them. But stigma is high, and sometimes a misplaced wish to do right by these cats leads people to find the nearest fed colony and leave their cat, hoping for the best.

I wish I could have met Donovan’s family.

If I could, I’d tell them directly: This is never the best option. It’s never the only option. If you can’t keep or safely rehome a pet, the @nycacc is there for you.

And what can you, an animal lover reading this, do about it?
šŸ’” Spread the word! Instead of disparaging open intake shelters as ā€œkill shelters,ā€ promote the low cost vetting and rehoming resources shared by local rescues and shelters.
šŸ’ø Donate to the rescuers who intervene both before and after abandonment. The best rescuers I know work to both help pet owners keep pets *and* scoop up abandoned animals.
šŸ’› Talk to your neighbors. If someone expresses frustration about an animal, approach with curiosity and willingness to meet people where they are. Often, it’s shame and frustration that leads people to quietly leave a carrier outside instead of asking for help.

Thankfully, with a massive assist from @danaandthecats, Donovan was brought inside likely within hours or days of being left behind. Now he’s ready to find someone who will foster him! If you have that friend who’s been thinking about it, this is a great time and an easy boy to help with.

We have a foster correspondent! šŸŽ¤

Thanks to @jennyleighmayer and family, Divine and her three beautiful kittens are set up in style, with expert care and attention from the whole family. To introduce them, Stella took the mic.

A few notes on kittens…

✨ If you encounter kittens outdoors, be sure to prioritize taking in their mama with them, to avoid separating them before they’re ready! Even if mama is feral, she should still come with them—you’ll just need to be TNR certified and follow best practices for caring for a feral cat indoors.
✨ Kittens need their mama until they are weaned, at least 6-8wks of age. If someone tries to give you a kitten before they are weaned, kindly share this info or offer to take mama with them until they are ready to be separated.
✨ Social bonds start young and are key to the healthy development of kittens. Kittens should have an age appropriate friend, whenever possible, to teach one another healthy ways of interacting with other cats. Always adopt kittens out to homes in pairs or to a home with another young, vetted kitten.

Keep following along for updates on Mother Divine and her three little Baltimore crabs! šŸ¦€
