Shout out to @laliff_ and @netflix for helping produce our little “Hoar” baby. S/O @wardcinema @lianaasmr @robertdouthat @ Taylor @iliana.guibert + crew and most importantly shout out @jeanette_dilone for creating this beautiful story, with so many colors, layers, and complexities.

Oh and Jeanette— thank you for hiring me LOL. You’re any actors dream writer / director. I keep saying it but you’re one of one. Hearing the entire theater laughing like that was a first for me and now I gotta feel that feeling again. I officially un-quit acting cuz I gotta feel that again 👀

Today is the day @jeanette_dilone beautiful film ‘HOAR’ premieres at @laliff_ film festival in LA! Jeanette took me outta retirement for this special story. It’s so dopeee. Nah fr the story is so original and I love me a mommy-daughter moment (we like the brown version of LADY BIRD ok). So proud of you Jeanette! You’re a so talented at so many things it hurts.

My booked and busy @iliana.guibert working with you was so inspiring, I want you to be my momma/auntie in everything (I’m already writing it for us lol).

*HIGH TANGIE* I’d like to use this as an opportunity to discuss how the nature of long form podcasts can intensify a sort of new-age-y parasocial relationship toward personalities on the internet.

That level of consistent intimacy builds this… unnatural closeness. But it’s still a deep understanding so maybe our future creates a new “natural”? Kinda nutty seeing as I had only watched one episode of Rory and Mal on Whoreible Decisions and came up with these notes. I was fully aware of the likelihood of being wayyy off. But alas, a woman’s intuition 🎯

Real Housewives of Canaan 🕍

The other day I showed my Dad these lovely photos that @davefotogram captured at @wtfmediastudios and he said “Wow B, these are so beautiful. This is how I picture you when I think of you.”

This is worth dissecting (because I like to start a fight and crave attention) anyways, my Dominican Boomer Dad always prefers me when I have long straight hair. He legit even treats me better when I do. It’s weird, I know.

I still love the man, for real, he is the best father in the world. But his internalized racism doesn’t go unnoticed. Afro-Carribean men or men of Afro-Caribbean descent (generally speaking) have a prototype of what a woman’s beauty is, and it’s {generally} always more European. Whether they are aware of it or not. If I’m clocking this as a grown woman, could you imagine what my family communicated when I was a CHILD? Hundreds of dollars through the years of burning my scalp and incinerating my natural kinks and coils to support an internally (and outwardly) racist idea of what is “beautiful”.

Sure, tides are changing, and my Dad always calls me his beautiful little girl no matter what my hair looks like. He knows I prefer my hair natural and he gotta get with the program cuz I am unlearning even my own internalized racism. I ain’t wit dat. And imma always call it out. Any ways, this is just something to ponder on this fine Wednesday. New episode out now.
