12 months. 5 washes. These @weirloom WL001 Raws were an absolute pleasure. This is my first pair of true straights and my first pair gone vintage fades. Thought it would be cool to photograph my fresh pair with my 12-month-worn pair. The comparison is incredible.

Big thanks to @denimhunters for the support and @denimstrummer for another indigo drenched trip around the sun. This year’s @indigoinvitational was fantastic. Congrats to all my fellow faders who crossed the finish line.

10 months. Six washes.

I’ve been thinking lately about what the @indigoinvitational is actually about.

It’s easy to focus on the outcome.

The fades. The contrast. The rankings. The prizes. Who absolutely destroyed a pair in twelve months and who somehow finished with jeans that look like they came off the shelf last Tuesday.

Maybe sometimes we put a little too much importance on that stuff.

We’re human. Give us a finish line and we’ll race toward it. Give us something to measure and we’ll compare it. Give us a prize and somebody will probably figure out how to chase it.

But if we make that the story, I think we miss the best part of this whole weird experiment.

I’ve had stubborn faders that I’ve worn for years and could barely coax the indigo out of. I’ve had other pairs look worn into oblivion after twelve months.

I wasn’t living radically different lives in either.

I was just living.

Working. Traveling. Riding a desk. Playing with my kids. Yard work. Skating. Fixing shit around the house. Going to dinner. Sitting on the couch. All the normal things that somehow add up to a life.

And that’s what I’ve always loved about raw denim.

It records without judging. ——> swipe for the rest!

Give two people the exact same pair of jeans. Same denim. Same cut. Same construction. Same starting point.

Then give them a year.

They won’t come back the same.

How could they?

Neither did the people wearing them.

To me, that’s the @indigoinvitational.

Thousands of people scattered around the world starting with something remarkably similar and ending up with something completely individual.

Some will chase high contrast. Some will wash the hell out of them. Some will baby them. Some will beat them to shit. Some will repair them three times. Some will finish the year wondering why their denim apparently refuses to acknowledge they’ve been wearing it.

That’s not a flaw in the experiment.

That’s the experiment.

The competition makes it fun. The prizes give us something to chase. Pride inevitably gets mixed in there too.

But none of those things get to decide whether somebody else’s experience with it has value.

Maybe the moment we become more interested in judg by @the.arcuate

Month ten with the Weirloom W001-R, and the jeans are officially doing that thing where they look better than I do in every photo.

Ten months down. Same pair. Same questionable life choices. Better fades.

Local H was one of those bands that if you know, you know.

They never quite broke through the way they probably should have. Not because the music wasn’t good. Not because the songs weren’t there. They just existed in that strange pocket of the 90s where a band could mean everything to a certain group of people and still somehow fly under the radar of the wider world.

Two guys.
A guitar doing the work of two instruments.
A sound that felt bigger and meaner than it had any right to.

Most people remember Bound for the Floor.
But if you spent any real time with Local H, you know that was just the doorway.

They broke through in 1996.

And funny enough, that was the same year a lot of things broke open for me too.

1996 was when I discovered counterculture.
When I started skating.
When I started pushing back against anything that smelled like authority.

It was also the year my parents divorced.

I was too young to actually process what I was feeling. I just knew something had shifted and the world suddenly felt less stable than it used to.

And 1996 wasn’t exactly an era built for teenage emotional intelligence.

We were the last of the latchkey generation.
Raised by each other, MTV, and whatever music videos happened to land on the screen that afternoon.

No one talked about self-care.
No one talked about mental health for teenagers.

You just figured it out.

Or you didn’t.

Skating, loud music, and bands like Local H gave a lot of us somewhere to put that energy.

Not solutions.
Just somewhere for the noise to go.

Looking back now, I don’t think it was really rebellion.

It was translation.

A bunch of kids trying to turn confusion, anger, and instability into something that made sense.

And sometimes all it took was a guitar, a chorus, and a song that felt like it understood you before you understood yourself.

Some bands define an era.

Others quietly soundtrack the moment you started figuring out who the hell you were.

Local H was that kind of band.

And if you know, you know.

There are songs that feel like they were written for a moment.

And then there are songs that feel like they’ve been waiting for one.

Hunger Strike by Temple of the Dog has always lived somewhere in between.

The band itself was a moment. Chris Cornell pulling together a group of musicians in the wake of Andrew Wood’s death. A project built out of grief, respect, and something unfinished that needed to be said out loud.

Eddie Vedder wasn’t even supposed to be on the track.
He was just there. A kid from San Diego, new to Seattle, still finding his place.

But when Cornell started singing, Vedder instinctively stepped in.

Not planned. Not written that way. Just something real happening in real time.

Listening to it now, it doesn’t feel like a relic of the 90s.

It feels current.

Because the hunger they’re singing about isn’t physical.
It’s moral. Emotional. Human.

It’s about knowing something is off and refusing to pretend it isn’t.
About feeling the imbalance and choosing not to numb yourself to it.
About sitting with discomfort instead of looking away.

And that feels familiar right now.

Not in a political way.
Not in a left or right kind of way.

In a human way.

Because before anything else, that’s what we are.

And somewhere along the line, it feels like that got lost behind labels, sides, and lines in the sand.

But the song doesn’t speak to ideology.

It speaks to conscience.

Cornell’s voice carries the weight.
Vedder’s grounds it.

Not competing. Not contrasting.
Just reinforcing something that already exists.

That’s what I keep coming back to.

Not just what they were saying.
But the willingness to say it without filtering it through a lens that divides people before it ever reaches them.

Because the world doesn’t need more noise.

It needs more people willing to feel what’s real, say it honestly, and put people above everything else.

Some songs don’t age.

They just wait for the world to catch up.
