In high school, Harlow Drake had vlog about solving crimes in her small town. Lainey was her off-camera side kick. Now in their 30's, it's been years since they've seen each other. Harlow now has a tv show. She invites Lainey for one last mystery at an old hotel.

This is Molly Harper's second (standalone) Cozy mystery, and I loved it. It's quirky & funny at times. It has a dash of romance. You had me at "hidden speakeasy".

For fans of Veronica Mars, Frankie Drake, and the Great Gatsby.

It works perfectly for the #52bookclubreadingchallenge Oktoberfest mini challenge prompt, A Thirsty Read.

Sinners on Sunday #2: These four Russian mafia brothers certainly fell for interesting women. I found myself craving dark cowboy romance while I watched the Canadian Finals Rodeo (CFR) recently. Anton caught my attention as a dark cowboy romance. Then I noticed Kirill was a single dad to a son with Autism, which also caught my attention. Start with Konstantin; these are best read in order.

I enjoyed this series. Anton is my favourite. I love a vet as a main character; one that works to rescue horses? Even better.

This was my first C.R. Jane book. I find dark cowboy romance hard to resist. I've been meaning to read her hockey series for awhile now.
🐎What I loved: her quirky sense of humour
🐴What I enjoyed: her writing style
🐎What I struggled with: it's about as dark as I want to go & a more graphic than I prefer
🐴 IYKYK: Growing up, in our tack room we had a few different saddles, including mom's barrel racing one & my great uncle's roping one. This is just a small selection of what a western saddle can look like. When I think of a western saddle, I always picture that beautiful, old roping saddle.

Overall, the characters are interesting, I loved Sienna's introduction to the town, and I enjoyed the writing. I'm looking forward to Ryder's story.

🐎 Not related to pumpkin spice season; I found this cute template on Pinterest & wanted to use it.

What happens when women refuse to be written out of the story? They take the lead.

Today is for the boss babes. The women who lead, speak their minds, take up space, and make sure other women are heard along the way. Here’s to stories that remind us how powerful our voices can be.

Elinor Florence writes Boss Babes, and I am here for it.

Daily Prompt 11: 2SLGBTQ+ Rep

Two books I read recently that had 2SLGBTQ÷ representation. Both were excellent. Mia P Manasala writes queer characters into all her books. As a Cozy mystery reader, I appreciate the diversity. I love the genre, but it definitely needs a lot more diversity. Mary Warren writes inclusive books.

It's World Mental Health Day. In this dark romance, the MFC, Emilia, struggles with her mental health. A traumatic childhood leads to cutting. She's currently in therapy, and her therapist recommends trying hypnosis to recover a memory. Unfortunately, this is devastating, causing a relapse. I do wish that Harris would have explored this storyline a little further. I love that K supports her therapy.

I highly recommend Death in the Cards by Mia P Manansala. This is her YA debut. The MFC is an enterprising high school student. She helps out at her mom's private detective agency & reads tarot cards at her high school. She takes Kali lessons from her aunt, a world renown martial arts champion. She helps out with her little brother, who has heath concerns. She gets her first case, helping a fellow student find her missing older sister. Let the shenanigans begin!

If you loved her first series, you can expect more Filipino food, family, and culture, a quirky FMC, and a fun story.

What I loved:
🃏Her parents are happily married. I love seeing all types of families represented, including happy ones.
🃏 She named her Chrysler Labaron Veronica (yes, as in Mars)
🃏The strong sense of community
🃏The MFC is kind of clueless in the romance department
🃏Filipino food & culture
🃏The author herself works with tarot cards, so that part of the storyline is authentic and handled with respect.
* I don't know a lot about tarot cards. I do know they are often misused in books & on screen, which frustrates me. I do occasionally work with Oracle cards, which are similar, but not the same.

Recommended for fans of:
🃏Her first series (note: they are independent of each other)
🃏Nancy Drew
🃏Veronica Mars
🃏Molly Harper's newest cozy, A Cute Little Murder

@novelidea_collabs presents to you: 𝖘𝖙𝖔𝖗𝖎𝖊𝖘 & 𝖘𝖍𝖆𝖉𝖔𝖜𝖘 👻

It’s officially October, which means it is time to turn down the lights and pretend that creaking sound in the hallway was just the house settling. 🔦🫣

Whether you are unravelling a dark historical mystery, getting lost in a paranormal world, reading a banned book, or just trying to survive a truly terrifying thriller, there is nothing quite like a book that makes you look twice at the shadows in the room.

🗞️🕸️🕯️📰🕷️⏳🕷️📰🕯️🕸️🗞️

In Alberta, shadows are influencing what stories are available in our libraries. Educators and librarians are qualified to decide what books are developmentally appropriate for school libraries. Not lobbyists. It is well known that four books in particular were targeted. Three of the 4 have 2SLGBTQ+ themes. Make no mistake. This is about content; not appropriateness. That is censorship. These four are award winning books chosen by librarians for their ability to discuss topics students may be struggling with in a relatable manner.
For this post I am specifically focusing on school libraries. I am not a librarian, but I have worked in both a public library and a school library. My background is children & youth. I am a passionate advocate of early literacy. I tried to find out what books my former school has removed from the library, but that information for the school district is not available. My former school district is one of the 41 (out of 63) that has removed library materials.
I wish this was a dark historical fiction rather than non-fiction.

QOTD: What is a favourite children's or YA book of yours that has been banned? Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Bill Martin, JR was banned in one of the States due to a case of mistaken identity. They knew this, but continued with the ban anyway. by @the.bookishowl
