I barely post myself on this page, however I wanted to reintroduce my mission statement
[my name is Hidaya, I am Somali. My mother was born in Tanzania and my father in Ethiopia. I have ties throughout the east and that’s why I wanted to share more about where I come from. The reason I started this page is to uplift and create positive representation of East African culture, this isn’t a page for politics. Homes We Carry is an ongoing photographic series that explores what it means to live without a permanent home. Drawing from my own experience of displacement across South Sudan, Sudan, and Kenya, the project reflects on memory, identity, belonging, and the emotional weight of carrying “home” within oneself when home is no longer a fixed place.

Through intimate portraits, personal spaces, and everyday moments, the series documents how displaced people preserve dignity, culture, and hope while rebuilding their lives. Rather than focusing only on loss, Homes We Carry speaks to resilience and the many ways people continue to create a sense of home wherever they find themselves.

What does home mean when you’ve had to leave it behind?
Homes We Carry is a visual exploration of displacement, memory, and belonging. Created across Kenya, the series follows people who continue to carry pieces of home within themselves despite migration, conflict, and uncertainty.
Home is more than a place. It lives in memory, in the objects we keep, in our relationships, and in the hope of beginning again.

Homes We Carry (2025–Ongoing)

Some homes survive only in memory—in the streets we once walked, the people we loved, and the meals that still carry us back. Food has become another way I remember the places I've lost, a taste that keeps home alive even when the landscape has changed.
