I was 26, confused, restless, and scared out of my mind.

Leaving behind a full-fledged career to chase words and take up writing as a full-time job felt insane. But I knew I had to give it a shot.

So I did.

Plenty of self-doubt, many sleepless nights, and countless writing gigs later, it all felt worth it when I landed a scriptwriting job at a big media company.🎬✍🏻

It should’ve felt surreal; I should’ve been happy… and for a while, I was.

But something was missing.

Deep down, I always knew I wanted to work with books. So, when I got the chance to intern at a publishing house, I grabbed it. And today, I'm living the dream— working as a full-time book editor, doing what I truly love. 🩷

So now, it’s time to return to the writer in me. To the stories, the poems, the unedited drafts, the late night journal entries, and my first love— BOOKS!💌

Before we read your book, we read your pitch. And sadly, that’s where many stories end.

Here are some common slip-ups I see all the time👇

1. No Cover Letter: I get it. We all want our stories to speak for us. But sending a synopsis attached to a blank email? A HUGE red flag. Say hello, tell us about your book… give us something.

2. Too long a Cover letter: The only thing worse than no cover letter is a 600-word one. We love passion, but this isn’t the place to narrate your entire writing journey. Keep it crisp, relevant, and focused on your manuscript.

3. Unclear Synopsis: If your synopsis doesn’t give a clear sense of where the story’s going, we’ve already lost interest. Aim for clarity, flow, and just enough intrigue.

4. Messy formatting: “I already wear glasses. Don’t make me read a size 8 Comic Sans,” is what I keep telling aspiring authors. Bad formatting is one of the top reasons manuscripts end up in the rejection pile. No page numbers, random fonts, inconsistent spacing— it doesn’t just scream unprofessional; it shows lack of care.

5. Overuse of AI tools: Yes, it’s 2025. Everyone uses ChatGPT. But don’t make it your writer. AI-generated submissions get rejected without a second thought. “But what if I paraphrased it and—” No. Trust me, we’ll know!

6. Slang in narration: Slang in dialogue is fine, especially if it’s important for your character’s voice. But if we see words like “rizz”, “skibidi”, “huzz” in narration, you are probably never hearing back from us.

💫Your story matters, sure. But for it to have a chance, you need to be careful of how you send it out into the world.
