Refilling the creative well is an important part of the writing process. Spending time in nature restores me in a way nothing else does so I thought I’d bring you along on my latest hike 🌱 taken in Pacific Northwest by @the.fictional.type

Been thinking about how the things I connected with as a kid have shaped my identity as a writer and artist. I wouldn’t be the writer I am today without the art I surrounded myself with growing up and wanted to give my childhood faves the love they deserve.

This is what it looks like to hit the 50k mark in a new project! ✨

The 50,000th word in my draft? “Exact.” Seems pretty fitting, doesn’t it? by @the.fictional.type

Trying to keep the momentum I gained in Sisters. I’m proud to say I hit my goal during the WWTS writing retreat and my current project is now past the 30k mark! ✨ taken in The Suttle Lodge & Boathouse by @the.fictional.type

My soul needed this week at Suttle.

Writing by the lake. Walking in nature. Meeting new friends and reconnecting with ones I’ve missed. Finding the spark in my story again. The WWTS retreat came at the exact time I needed it.

I’m already missing this place and these people ✨

Somehow it’s been 10 years since I completed my MFA program.

I consider applying and going to grad school to be the first big risk I ever took and I’m proud that that risk was an investment in my art. It was a huge part of becoming the writer I am today.

Forever grateful for those two years and everything that’s come after. taken in Orange, California by @the.fictional.type

Earth Day 🌱

Spending time in nature is high on my list of favorite things. In an anxious world, being outside brings me peace.

As someone who greatly prefers the natural world to the digital, I’m constantly being told I’m going to be left behind by tech. But that’s fine with me.

Technology can never replace the stillness I feel among the trees. And it can never turn that feeling into art.

So I’m going to listen to the birds. I’m going to leave only footprints. I’m going to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Not just one day out of the year, but every day.

Let’s love this planet the way it deserves.

Also, if you’re looking for an anti-AI, nature-loving anthem to fuel your creativity, I’ve had the song in this post on repeat lately. by @the.fictional.type

Reflecting on the year (and unable to resist a good mirror pun).

This year was challenging personally and creatively, as evidenced by the fact that I’ve been largely absent on here. I recently decided the shelve the project I’ve spent the last five years working on and I’m trying to figure out what’s next.

It’s been a while since I’ve played around with new ideas, but I think it’s what I need right now. Not sure what story idea I’ll land on, but it’s been exciting having endless possibilities in front of me. I’m ready to carry that new-project-excitement into the new year.

Driving south down the coast, windows down. Pulling over just to listen to the waves crash on the beach. Exploring lighthouses and watching the sun set.

And now, wishing some trips didn’t have to end.

I’ve been wanting to do this road trip for years and I feel like I did it at exactly the right time. It wasn’t the destination, it was the journey. I stopped every time something caught my eye. I said yes when experiences presented themselves. I even got to see some friends along the way (shout out to @maddywroteit and @wri_tor for making the time).

I loved every minute exploring this beautiful coast. I don’t think I’ll ever get over those views. by @the.fictional.type

Three months into 2025 and this year has been challenging to say the least. I haven’t been on here much and I haven’t been writing much as I’ve focused on dealing with the stress of some real life issues. It’s all led to the dreaded slump.

The worst part is that I tend to feel my best when I’m writing, but coming out the other side of a health emergency, my brain just won’t reengage with creative work. Right now, I’m just hoping that things calm down enough that I can find my way back to storytelling soon. I suppose this isn’t really a writing update, simply an acknowledgment that life can be rough sometimes.

On a positive note, the cherry blossoms are blooming and this is always one of my favorite times of year. by @the.fictional.type
