Waaaaay too much sorrow and barely any bliss!

So extremely far from ‘the best book I’ll read this year’ that the description is a dot in the horizon!

But seriously, if you like this book tell me why?

Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason just did not work for me. The sentence construction was broken in weird ways and it seems to portray that it’s okay to be destructive to self and others but oh- it’ll work out at the end.

Patrick is the character whose sorrow I would have rather read about!

Negative ⭐️ for this one

⭐️A by-god honest review ⭐️

A family run sweet shop, a treasure hunt for an inheritance, and a nostalgic small town setting? It sounded exactly like my kind of book and I really wanted to love it but sadly this one didn’t work for me.

The story follows Taru Taneja as she takes on a series of quests set by her beloved Lalaji to prove she’s worthy of inheriting the legacy of Lallan Sweets. Along for the ride is her childhood best friend (and lingering crush), Nikku, aka Nikhil Sabharwal of Sabharwal Stationers.

My biggest gripe was that the book tries to recreate the atmospheric simplicity of the 80s and 90s but is constantly trying to remind you of how progressive its characters are. Instead of feeling natural, it often felt like the story was trying to tick boxes. Then there’s the romance, which I felt the book could have done without. Taru and Nikku had far more potential as lifelong friends than as a love story. Their friendship was the relationship I was flipping the pages! Finally, for a book that’s barely 300 pages, this felt long! The pacing was uneven, with the important quest scenes wrapped up in a few pages while the vibe building and romance took centre stage.

The concept is wonderful but the execution leaned too heavily on nostalgia, cosy vibes and a colourful cover. And maybe it’s just me but even the title of the book felt like a missed opportunity. Something like “The Quest for Lallan” would have probably had me reaching for it much sooner!

So if you’ve been looking at this one at the bookstore or library and doing the should I / should I not dance - it’s best to go ahead and skip this one!

This is Lallan Sweets by Srishti Chaudhary (my rating is in the number of stars at the start of this post!).

I would love to know if this Bookstagram favourite charmed you! Drop your views in the comments below! A hand holding up a book in the balcony against the backdrop of the gloomy street by @the.hungry.reader

POV: You picked up a book because it sounded bonkers yet somehow ended up with a full heart.

The Road to Tender Hearts follows PJ Halliday, a 63 year old divorced million dollar lottery winner, on a rather questionable cross-country road trip. Joining him on this trip of a lifetime is his estranged daughter, his long lost grandchildren, and a cat that may or may not have psychic abilities to foretell death.

As they travel along the highways, the situations grow increasingly bizarre, the characters make questionable decisions (in a book about second chances no less), and there’s an almost surreal quality to the entire journey. But Annie Hartnett somehow holds it all together with dark humour that lands effortlessly and characters who feel real beneath all the chaos. Hartnett has somehow bound this book together by touching upon the darker corners of life like grief, loneliness, regret, fractured families, the fear of growing old, the weight of all the things we never say, all of it with tenderness. It reminds the reader that hope often shows up in the most unlikely places, or animals as it were.

The character driven novel is funny without trying too hard, heartbreaking without becoming heavy, and quietly optimistic while being utterly weird and whimsical. It’s been a trip I’m unlikely to forget any time soon!

The Road to Tender Hearts by Annie Hartnett - 4.75⭐️

A huge thank you to @hachette_india for trusting me with a review copy of this emotionally satisfying book!

Apparently if you share enough reels of the ominous world book day with your husband, which is also the thread by which the marriage dangles, you do actually end up with one gift!
