Before you spend $100 on a longevity supplement… 👀

Want to put these habits into practice? 💛 I’ve created a free one-page Longevity Plan to help you stay on top of your pet’s health.

Comment PLAN and I’ll send you a copy.

Here are 5 biohacks you can implement at home that cost next to nothing:

🐾Give your dog a job — sniffing, searching, foraging and working for food are easy ways to add enrichment to their day.

🥣 Measure. Their. Portions. — use a measuring cup or, better yet, kitchen scales. Small extras add up.

🪥Brush-a, brush-a, brush-a — daily tooth brushing is still the gold standard for home dental care.

💪Do you even lift? — strength matters as dogs age. Your house can double as a very basic dog gym.

🐶 Know their normal — use your hands. Know their body condition, lumps, bumps and what normally feels like them, so you’re more likely to notice when something changes.

Longevity doesn’t have to start with expensive supplements and fancy tech.

Sometimes the highest-value things are the simplest ones — done consistently.

Save this for your dog’s longevity routine. 🐾

I’m Dr Caitlin, The Longevity Vet, helping you Love your pet for longer.

🐾 Phew! The exhibition floor had treats, food, leashes, beds, safety items, strollers, the ever popular dog docks and agility in the arenas, then we did it all again on the other side for out feline friends! @catloversfestival @thedogloversfestival

Vets wear many hats. Some fit better than others. 🩺 🐾

*And obviously this is meant for entertainment, I’m not claiming to be a specialist. Except tiredness. I should be Board Certified in that.

Well, the people have spoken. Pet parent by a landslide! 🐾

Confession: I’m still guilty of writing “owner…” in my clinical notes. Twenty years of habit is hard to shake.

Perhaps this old dog will have to learn some new tricks. 🐕

Special shoutout to the pet slaves and pet butlers. 🎩

Whatever you call yourself, I think we can all agree on who’s actually in charge. 🐾

It’s the thought that counts. Unless the thought comes with lilies and you own a cat. 💀💐

PSA for cat parents: ALL parts of true lilies are extremely toxic to cats. Even if you’re sure they won’t eat them, they could rub up against them then groom themselves later which can cause potentially fatal acute kidney injury.

If you suspect exposure, contact your vet immediately.

And to the gorgeous person who bought me these… Obviously a dog person. 😂❤️

Pet owner, pet parent, or pet guardian?

Or something else entirely?

I think it’s evolving now to be more reflective of the relationship and the special bond but I’m so curious...

Tell me in the poll, and does your vet use the same word?

Send this to the friend who has strong feelings about this!

Your pet’s medical record tells us a lot more than their vaccination history.

Some of the most useful notes are the little things we learn along the way: what worries them, what works, what absolutely does not work — and occasionally, some useful information about the human who brought them in.

They might sound funny out of context, but these notes can make the next visit safer, calmer, and easier for everyone.

And sometimes they get very specific... 🫣

So, what would be written in your pet’s file? 👇

(Bonus points if you can spot the typo… proof I write my own content, not AI!)

One of the most common things I hear in consults: “But their teeth don’t look that bad?”

And that’s exactly the problem — dental disease isn’t always particularly good at advertising itself.

One of the things I think surprises most dog owners is that the amount of calculus you can see is actually a pretty poor way to judge how much periodontal disease is present.

And dogs don’t always make it easy for us. They can still eat, play, and enthusiastically accept treats despite having a painful mouth. Still eating does not automatically mean comfortable.

Dental health is an important part of a longevity lifestyle. I want us maintaining a healthy, functional, comfortable mouth, minimising chronic inflammation, and supporting a healthy oral microbiome for the years ahead.

Know someone who proudly tells you their dog has “great teeth” because they’re white? Send them this Reel. 👀

I love tennis 🎾

But as a vet, I won’t let my dogs play with tennis balls.

Here’s why 👆

Your dog swallows their toothpaste, so choosing the right one does matter.🪥

Start with a toothpaste formulated specifically for pets. Human toothpaste can contain ingredients that are unsafe for dogs, and that minty flavour we enjoy may make brushing far less appealing to them.

I also look for the VOHC seal. The Veterinary Oral Health Council reviews evidence submitted for individual products and awards its seal for demonstrated plaque control, tartar control, or both. It isn’t the only marker of a good product, but it is a useful evidence point when you’re navigating dozens of options.

Ultimately, though, the toothbrush is doing most of the heavy lifting by physically disrupting plaque. The toothpaste is what will slow the build up coming back so quickly.

I’ve linked some of the pet toothpastes I recommend in my bio.

Part 2: what else can support your dog’s dental routine when brushing alone isn’t the whole answer.
