A CARNAL DISSECTION: Built from my own body, one photograph at a time. In total, this one artwork is composed of up to 50 individual photographs that I took. No generative AI was used. To make this work, I photographed my head from multiple angles, then shot separate fragments of my body in close detail. Those images were digitally stitched into a single “digital sculpture” using pseudo-surgical collage methods—cutting, grafting, and suturing flesh until the figure emerged. The torso is constructed from photographs of my chest and back, fused together and reworked with scars, bruising, blemishes, and other imperfections sourced from additional photographs taken across my body. The backdrop is simply draped material, staged and photographed as its own element. The final composition was printed and stretched onto canvas, then physically intervened with surface work: acrylic paints and gels, scratches, and marks made using nails, scalpels, and sandpaper. A Carnal Dissection: This project defines taboo desire not merely as socially prohibited appetite, but as desire structured through cultural interdiction—that which must be concealed yet compels fascination. Taboo and transgression are treated as mutually constitutive rather than oppositional, which is central to how the project understands desire, prohibition, and bodily spectacle. The grotesque body becomes a site where desire and aversion coexist, generating affective instability and ethical tension. Literary critic and philosopher Julia Kristeva is used here in a supporting capacity to clarify boundary disturbance and affective instability, while the primary concern remains how these effects are organised through spectatorial structures. Similarly, body-gothic is understood not simply as a genre aesthetic but as a structural condition in which the body becomes unstable, penetrable, and ontologically uncertain. Body-gothic imagery foregrounds dismemberment, exposure, and fragmentation, yet these effects are incomplete without the gaze that consumes them. I am pleased to share that selected artworks from my series ‘A Carnal Dissection’ will be heading to England for Fringe Arts Bath, 2026. @fringeartsbath The works will be included in ‘The Absurd’ exhibition, running from 22 May—6 June 2026.

The Absurd will explore ‘how artists respond to a world that often feels uncertain or resistant to clear meaning’. Photography will sit at the centre of the exhibition, supported by moving image, sound, installation, performance and collage. The exhibition will ‘draw lightly on existential ideas without seeking to illustrate philosophy directly’.
