Published @mercatorfondsfondsmercator on the occasion of Lucia Bru’s exhibition at MAC’S Grand-Hornu, this bilingual monograph brings together contributions by Denis Gielen and Qilan Shen, a preface by artist Michel François, and a rich iconography of over one hundred images spread across 160 pages.

For more than thirty years, Lucia Bru (born in 1970 in Brussels) has been developing a body of sculptural work based on experimentation with materials—paper, crystal, porcelain, cement, and plaster—and on the subtle interplay between geometric precision and random processes. Cubes, cages, grids, right angles, and mirrors are the primary recurring forms in her work. Both understated and complex, these structures result from a constant dialogue between controlled gestures and the unpredictable reactions of the material.

Lucia Bru’s creative process is based on a sustained focus on the behavior of materials. By incorporating uncertainty and chance, the artist conceives of sculpture as a space for negotiation with a mineral world endowed with memory, resistance, and transformation. This relationship opens her work to organic, animal, and human resonances, without ever compromising on a rigorous formal economy.

Drawing, photography, and video also occupy an essential place in her practice. These mediums allow her to explore subtle and transient phenomena—reflections, folds, shadows, hollows, or tensions—and to reveal their perceptual and spatial dimensions. At the same time, Lucia Bru has, since her beginnings, kept all of her essays and fragments, gradually building a physical archive of her work. This body of experiments, both methodical and intuitive, sheds light on the continuities and shifts in her approach.

Taken together, these pieces evoke, through their presentation and status, Eva Hesse’s Test Pieces and offer a reading of Lucia Bru’s work that is both retrospective and open-ended.

My road trip through Sweden and Norway began and ended with a nice museum visit: on the way there, I made a long stop at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, Denmark, and on the way back, at Voorlinden in Wassenaar, the Netherlands. Wonderful!

I’d already crossed the Stekenjokk Plateau twice — literally and figuratively the peak of Sweden’s Wilderness Road. I took my time, stopping often to scan the landscape through my binoculars, but there wasn’t a reindeer in sight.

So I decided to spend the night up there and try again the following morning. It turned out to be the perfect decision: at first light, I spotted no fewer than three groups of reindeer. This particular group was even kind enough to cross the river right in front of me.

One of those wild moments you can live on for days — and I’m still basking in the afterglow.

To Disappear with a Trace, une vie d’artiste

This marvellous book @jean_claude_wouters is not about art or about one artist, it is about the journey of encounters, occurrences, opportunities, curiosity, and discoveries.

Jean Claude Wouters is a multidisciplinary artist born in Belgium. As a child he expressed himself through drawing, later expanding his practice into painting, dance, experimental film, performance, documentary and commissioned works, and eventually moving fluidly into photography and painting.
He practiced these mediums while exploring diverse territories, from West to East, and from East to West. He consistently embraced the role of an outsider, finding it the position that suited him best. by @the.paper.man

El Pulso del Agua @nilsverkaeren
Published @brunodevos @hopperandfuchs on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition at Museo de Arte Moderno de Pereira, Colombia

Graphic Design @thisis__earl & @isa__vanderheyden
176p 32x24cm Paperback Otabind printed @zwartopwit on Munken Polar 1.4-150gsm @munkenpaper

El Pulso del Agua (The Pulse of the Water) documents the ambitious painting expeditions of Belgian artist Nils Verkaeren across the diverse landscapes of Colombia, eschewing the traditional studio for a “contemporary plein air” approach. Over several years, Nils Verkaeren travelled along these waterways, from the Magdalena and the Cauca to the remote rivers of the Amazon basin, working directly within the landscapes they shape. El Pulso del Agua brings together paintings and reflections that emerged from these encounters. Rather than approaching water as a motif, Verkaeren understands it as a principle, a force through which landscape reveals itself as movement, erosion, sediment, and time. Painting becomes a way of reading the territory, of entering the slow pulse of rivers that have shaped Colombia for millennia. The resulting canvases are more than mere representations; they are physical records of the journey, often carried through harsh terrain and shaped by the local climate, movement, and geography.

Nils Verkaeren (b. 1980) is a Belgian painter whose practice is defined by direct engagement with the natural world. Eschewing the confines of a traditional studio, he works as a contemporary plein air painter, seeking to merge his artistic vision with the energy of his surroundings. Verkaeren has repeatedly withdrawn from society to paint in remote, often inhospitable environments, undertaking expeditions across Morocco, Mexico, and Colombia. In April 2026, he was presenting a solo exhibition at the Museo de Pereira in Colombia. He has also been featured at Art Brussels and ARTBO (Bogotá). Verkaeren is represented @zwarthuis and is based in Antwerp, Belgium
