Most hugs end before your brain even reacts.

3 seconds. Pat on the back. Move on. Functional. Done.

We always stop right before the point where it actually works. At around 20 seconds, oxytocin releases. Your nervous system switches from alert to safe. The tension you carry all day starts to dissolve.

But what happens during those 20 seconds is different for everyone.

With someone you trust deeply - your partner, your child, your best friend - you probably let go immediately. No resistance. Just: being there. And then you notice how rarely you actually do this. How often the hug is a reflex, not a moment. 3 seconds, autopilot. Even though you could give each other those 20 seconds every single day.

With someone less close, it’s different. After a few seconds, the urge to pull away kicks in. „Too long.“ „Too close.“ „Too needy.“ Your body wants out. That’s not instinct. That’s a protection program. From a time when closeness meant vulnerability and vulnerability meant danger.

Both are honest. Both show you something about yourself.

The exercise:
→ 20 seconds. Breathe. Don’t let go.
→ Observe: Do you fall in? Or do you fight it?

A real hug is an invitation, not an ambush. Ask. And give the other person the freedom to say no. The asking itself is already connection.

The urge to pull away might come. Let it pass. Behind it is something you haven’t felt in a long time.

Your nervous system registers: I’m safe. I’m not alone.

People stuck in rumination can’t hold eye contact.

That’s not weakness. That’s neurology.

Eye contact activates your mirror neurons. Oxytocin rises. Your Default Mode Network goes quiet.

But we’ve forgotten how to look. A quick glance, then away. Down to the phone. Out the window. Anywhere but the eyes.

The exercise:
→ 3 seconds of eye contact
→ With every interaction today
→ Cashier, barista, colleague

Feels weird at first. Then someone smiles back. Or nods. Or suddenly says more than „Please, Thanks, Bye.“

Your nervous system registers: I belong. I’m not separate.

Sensing and ruminating are mutually exclusive. Neurologically.

When you perceive, your Default Mode Network goes quiet. It HAS to.

The exercise:
→ 5 things you see
→ 4 things you hear
→ 3 things you feel (temperature, texture, pressure)
→ 2 things you smell
→ 1 thing you taste

Takes 30 seconds. Brings you into the present. Instantly.

Your jaw is a control center.

It moves when you just THINK - measurable, even if you don’t notice.

It clenches when you’re stressed - evolutionary leftover, preparing for fight.

It’s connected to your pelvic floor through fascia. That’s why midwives say: relaxed jaw = easier birth.

The exercise:
Check in 5x a day. How is your jaw right now? What are you doing? If it’s tense - release. Notice in which moments it works the hardest. Get to know it.

After a few days you’ll know more about your stress level than any app could tell you.

Every time you remember, you rebuild the memory.
.
With what you know today. With what you feel today. With what you need today.
.
The „real“ version doesn’t exist. It never did.
.
Even back then, everything was already filtered - through your perception, your expectations, your state.
.
The question isn’t: Is my memory accurate?
It’s: What purpose does it serve me now?
.
💬 The question for you: Is there a story from your past that you view differently today? Maybe with more compassion or a new perspective?

Let me know in the comments. 👇

Thoughts aren’t neutral observations.

They’re tools. Your brain uses them to tell you something. To warn you. To validate you. To process old wounds.

The content is often less important than the function.

Next time a thought won’t stop: Don’t ask „Is this true?“ Ask: „What am I trying to tell myself?“

Peripheral vision. 30 seconds. No joke.

When you widen your gaze instead of focusing, your nervous system switches from stress to calm.

Parasympathetic activated. Heart rate down. Shoulders relaxed.

Did you feel it?
