Welcome to The 005, the podcast that celebrates the people, places, and stories that make West University Place such a special community!
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
๐ŸŽƒ Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, and in West U that means race day!

King & Spalding's WEST U HALLOWEEN DASH is back on October 31 for its 15th year, so we invited the neighbor who started it, Michele Marvin, into the studio for Episode 5 of The 005.

Natalie and Michele get into:

๐Ÿƒ Why Michele decided West U needed its own 5K
๐Ÿ… The Olympian and the elite marathoner who have lined up alongside your neighbors
๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ How race proceeds bought bulletproof vests and helmets for West U first responders
๐Ÿ“ What else the Dash has funded: the Rec Center track, rowing machines, and pickleball courts
๐Ÿถ The dog and stroller run, the costume contest, and a medal for every kid in the Fun Run

Michele wants to break 1,000 runners this year, and you can register right up to race morning.

๐Ÿ“… Saturday, October 31
โฐ 5K at 8:00 a.m. | Kids' Fun Run at 8:45 a.m.
๐Ÿ“ Starts and finishes on Auden, by the library

๐ŸŽง Full episode link and Halloween Dash registration links are in our bio.

Episode 4 is now live! We celebrate Little Matt's, West U's favorite neighborhood restaurant. ๐Ÿ”— Full episode at the link in our bio

Natalie sits down with owners Cindy & Bill Lillard โ€” and the one and only Tim Myers โ€” to talk about the little West U spot that has an important mission.

A taste of what you'll hear ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ” Why it's called "Little Matt's" (hint: it was never a kid named Matt)
๐Ÿงก The mission behind the burgers โ€” and its deep ties to Texas Children's Hospital
๐Ÿ™ Buying the place four months before COVIDโ€ฆ and how the whole community rallied to save it
๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿณ Tim Myers on a decade of hiring and mentoring West U's teenagers
โญ How a neighborhood burger joint got named one of the most family-friendly restaurants in the country
๐Ÿ’Œ The wish wall โ€” and the families it's quietly carried through the hardest times

It's a conversation about food, faith, family, and why Little Matt's is the heart of West U. ๐Ÿงก

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ NEW EPISODE โ€” and this one's for everyone who's ever typed "can anyone recommend a plumber?"

For 12 years, Mariana Pope has been the woman behind the West U Information Exchange โ€” the Facebook group many of us check before we check the news. She's a full-time attorney, a mom of four, and she's run "Wooey" (her word โ€” we're making it a thing) entirely as a volunteer since 2014.

Natalie sits down with Mariana to talk about:

๐ŸŒŸ How it all started
๐Ÿšซ What gets a post taken down โ€” and why
๐Ÿ‘™ The infamous thong post
๐Ÿ‹ The lemon-stealing nanny
โค๏ธ The donation drives and emergency rescues that show what West U is really made of
๐Ÿˆ And a surprise visit from Prince Pumpkin himself

Resident Spotlight! ๐Ÿ’ซ
Last week, Natalie was honored to attend a reception at Navy Blue in Rice Village for West U resident and accomplished artist, Kristi Herman. Many of her pieces will be on display at the restaurant and available for purchase for the next several weeks. You can also find her work at Reeves Gallery.
As a full-time painter, Kristi uses abstract art to thoughtfully process autobiographical experiences, ranging from subtle observations to pivotal life events. Her work explores the use of flora for expression.
Kristi attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia, where she majored in studio art under the guidance of professors Frank Hobbs and Polly Dixon. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at Austin.

This rainy Memorial Day weekend is a bit brighter thanks to the American and Texas flags the @westurotaryclub places in yards throughout the neighborhood. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

With an annual donation, the Rotarians will place flags in your yard four times a year to celebrate Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day. They do an amazing job, and the donations help support the charitable causes sponsored through the Rotary Club of West U Foundation.

Order your flags today and theyโ€™ll be in your yard for the 4th of July! To order, visit westurotary.org taken in West University Place, Texas by @the005online
