Come with me for my very first food review! 🍩✨
For Blindness Awareness Month, I wanted to start reviewing local food spots with a twist — checking out the food and how accessible the space is for blind and low vision diners (and their Guide Dogs!)
Today’s stop: Specialty Donuts at Ed.Square. I brought my cane along today, and while the loaded Nutella & strawberry bites were SO good 🍓🍫, the seating area is pretty compact. It’d be a bit tight for a Guide Dog to rest comfortably under the table.
I’d love to know: should I review more spots around Campbelltown and Liverpool that have solid table space for Guide Dogs? Let me know below! 👇🐶

My little foodie is surprising me in the best way!

For the longest time, my son’s safe foods have been the usual favourites: chicken nuggets, noodles, spaghetti Bolognese, sushi and aloe vera juice. 🍗🍜🍣

But over the past three months, something beautiful has been happening. He’s been scrolling through Instagram, finding recipes he likes and asking me, “Mum, can you make this for me?” 🥹👨‍🍳

And do you know what shocked me the MOST? He asked me to make bistec a lo pobre! 🇨🇱🍳🥩🍟

SIX MONTHS AGO, THIS KID WOULDN’T EVEN TOUCH AN EGG. 😂😭

And now he’s requesting a traditional Chilean dish that includes steak, fried eggs, caramelised onions and chips!

As his mum, watching him become curious about food and explore things at his own pace makes my heart so happy. ❤️

Autistic kids can have strong food preferences, and every child’s journey is different. This isn’t about forcing him to eat or celebrating a “cure” — it’s about following his interests, respecting his safe foods and celebrating the little victories that mean SO MUCH to us.

From refusing to touch an egg to requesting bistec a lo pobre. MAMÁ IS NOT OKAY. 😭😂❤️🇨🇱

Some moments remind you just how proud and grateful you are to be a mum. Today was one of those moments. ❤️🥹

I was once told my son would need help getting dressed and might not be able to communicate. I was made to believe that being autistic would mean he’d be a burden to our family.

But I never accepted those limits for him.

Today, it took him an hour to shower, get dressed and organise his sensory pack for a special bonding day with his Tío — watching The Lord of the Rings with a live orchestra at the International Convention Centre. 🧙‍♂️🎻💍

Along the way, he communicated his concerns, advocated for his needs and helped us plan a comfortable journey for both of us. That is communication, independence and care.

I’m not proud because he did things a certain way. I’m proud because he is being himself, in his own way and in his own time. ❤️

Being autistic is part of who he is, and it will never diminish his worth or his place in this world.

THE SENATE HAS SPOKEN.

🎒 I have packed the sacred provisions:
🌯 Guillermo’s safe food in the thermos.
💧 His water.
🍪 My emergency snacks.
🦯 My cane.
🧠 And approximately 17,000 contingency plans.

But alas… there was no room for Guillermo’s jacket.

So I have claimed it.

“You see, Guillermo… the backpack has no room. The jacket must be worn.”

☀️ The sun grew stronger.
🎒 The backpack grew heavier.
🧥 The jacket became a hood.

And now I stand before you…

Two photos. Same image. Two very different ways of seeing it.

The first is what many people might see.

The second is closer to what I see — darker, reduced contrast, and affected by myopic macular degeneration.

Imagine putting THIS much energy into questioning a disabled person who is simply trying to raise awareness about how we communicate.

I said, “Hi, I’m legally blind. Can you verbally tell me how to get there?”

Somehow, the takeaway was: “Maybe they’re confused because you’re wearing glasses.”

Dude… blindness is a spectrum.

Wearing glasses doesn’t magically cancel out being blind.
