Today you would have been 76. Not a day goes by I don’t miss you. This hike was taken in 2019. Before the accident, before lockdowns, before it all. We had no idea that that crippling pain in your hip was the Stage 4 cancer some doctor missed, but it didn’t stop you from being in a space you loved with us. I have no idea the person I would be without you and am glad I don’t have to. You were my dad and you loved me as much as I love you. Thank you for everything. A tale in two photos. In the first photo what you are looking at is my 96 year old grandmother’s chair on the right hand side of the frame. On the left hand side is a doll made to resemble my grandfather (it was made for her years before his passing). That ladies and gents is a love to wish for. He has been dead for over 20 years and she still keeps him by her side, within literal eye sight. The second photo is what you get when that man asks that you take care of her when he passes. Chris and I have been doing Valentines with my grandmother for years now as a part to live up to that promise we made. Here is to you GB and your love for one of the most important women in my life. Dinner with grandma was extra special today. Another year, another reminder that I was born with a pretty sweet partner in crime. I never take for granted I was born with someone so special. Though we may be twins there is no one like you and you continue to show me how to be a better person everyday. Love you to the moon and back. Monoaware is a Japanese aesthetic ideal that deals with the idea that true beauty comes from impermanence. This idea is usually depicted visually with a falling cherry blossoms. And as impermanent as the blossoms falling around me so too was my perfect moment (today and yesterday) with Murphy a 5 month old westie pup. Perks of the job. Two years ago today I had to witness a thing no one should; my father getting hit by a car. Not only did I witness it but I was also his first responder. It was obvious when I approached him he was beyond care I could render, but by chance he was right by “The Coo Coos Nest” (PFD Engine 68 Ladder 13). They were on the scene just as fast as I could turn my head in their direction to call for help. In less than 5 minutes my father was stabilized and on his way to Presby. If it were not for the fast action of these men and women on the scene I am not sure we would have had the remaining time with my Dad the way we did. Almost three months after having a cancerous kidney removed, neck fused, and elbow surgery this man was back at work. We all should strive for the strength my father had. Never waste a moment to tell your loved ones you love them. Kiss them every chance you get. You just never know. *This was the photo that blew away that he tried to save. The street was empty he checked both ways but for those who know 52nd and Baltimore know people love speeding through lights and intersections.* There will never be enough words to express my gratitude for the actions of @phillyfiredept that day. Every year that passes I make sure to go back and thank the men and women who saved my dads life in the course of their day to day job. Ladder 13 you will never know how much you mean to my family. No words will ever describe the size of the wake in your passing. My father wasn’t always the best father, because he was a human with all the faults and failings we have, but he tried every day literally until his last breath. He sacrificed his whole life for the sake of his children’s futures and I will never be able to thank him enough. All I can hope is that within me is a fraction of a percent of the Man he was, and for those that knew him I know you hope the same about yourself. Thats just who he was. Ducky may not be around as much any more. But oh man when he is life is just the best. While he is no replacement for @freyfreythebae he catches me off guard with how similar they look.
