In November, I was one of the selected artists to participate in the inaugural edition of the ECOSCAPES research residency in Nicosia, a flagship initiative of Magnus Tempus 360, produced by Producer 360. I was already working on a project concerning endangered and vulnerable endemic island species, and I wanted to propose a project focusing on another type of flora that inhabits the city. I started walking around Nicosia Old Town, documenting invasive and self-sown plants growing from cracks and walls, which are active parts of urban ecologies. After discussing with our mentors, Harun Morrison and Alessandro Vincentelli, I realised my approach was purely archival—a Western approach of documentation and profiling—and that I had never really touched them or looked at them closely. I then started gathering them, and by doing so, with itchy hands, the idea of a bouquet of weeds came into my mind. A bouquet of weeds, symbols of resilience and resistance towards the materiality of the city, became a bouquet of well-wishing. ‘A wish to resist well’ was developed into a photographic project to give these plants a stage. A selection of these images is now available as a collectable, limited-edition series of seven through the Edit Store. I’m deeply grateful to Halime Ozdemir di Larusso, Harun Morrison, Alessandro Vincentelli, the Edit Gallery, and 6x6 Photography for their support along the way.
