Why? Recently I was asked why am I training and when I say training, that person was referring to training for Hyrox, but just for further context I am also training for a half marathon.

I’m going to take you all on a little journey through my pictures of my why. At one point of my life, I was pursuing modeling and as that door opened I just thought it was my lifelong destiny.

It is important that you know that I also did not want to have children, and gave into the idea that I did not think that I could have children. These thoughts, at the time, were strongly driven by fear and uncertainty of the mother that I would be.

Fast-forward, modeling ended & I got pregnant right after I got married and my bump grew. I had my first child and then 2 1/2 months later here we grow again. I found out that I was pregnant with my second child and then that bump grew & I had my second child.

I remember sitting next to my grandmother’s that you see in one of the photos wondering how in the world I was going to do this. Most days I was carrying my son on top of my baby bump. Talk about a workout LAWD! Mind you I also was walking into single motherhood, so being pregnant while waking up in the middle of the night was beyond me. All the thoughts of doubt, uncertainty, and fear that I felt prior to ever becoming pregnant swarmed my mind constantly.

I labored for 19 and 17 hours for my children respectively. I had a cesarean with my first child and then a vaginal birth after cesarean with my second (which is not always encouraged by doctors). Most days as my children grew in every developmental stage of their little lives, I felt like every day was a hazing session at the time. But here I am.

God has been so faithful in showing me that my doubts and feelings of fear were real, but they weren’t true. He showed me through that experience, and throughout my whole life that I literally get to do the hard things and it’s really only through Godā€˜s strength that I’m able to endure everything that I have ever gone through. When training I believe that it is truly through Jesus Christ who gives me strength to do anything that is placed on my heart to do.

Every season I reevaluate my whole life as I am a very introspective being and here are a few things that I won’t be ā€œkeepingā€ this season.

1. Being the system for everything.

Sometimes the best thing I can do is create structure that doesn’t require me to constantly be the structure.

ļæ¼For instance, as a parent, I would be doing my kids a dis-service if I created structure for them to follow for their development but then I still held their hand every moment. It’s like when teaching a child to walk, if you are always holding their hand every moment they will never know if what they learned or tried actually works.

2. Confusing my capacity with my responsibility.

I stepped into greater leadership earlier this year within an organization because I had the capacity to do it.

And for a moment, I was proud of how much I could carry.

But somewhere along the way, I started noticing that I was giving so much of myself to what I could handle that I had less of myself available for what I was actually responsible for.

My kids had me physically but I realized they weren’t always getting the most emotionally/ mentally present version of me.

That made me reevaluate some things.

Because, just because you have the capacity to carry more doesn’t mean you should.

Sometimes saying yes to everything you can do quietly pulls you away from the things only you can do.

Leadership matters to me. Growth matters to me. My work matters to me.

But being present for my children is a responsibility I never want my ambition to compete with.

So I’ve learned to protect my capacity for what I’m responsible for not fill it simply because there’s room. by @the_gentleroot

A little fall cleaning and reorganizing, letting my plants soak up the last bit of fresh air before winter settles in. šŸ‚šŸƒšŸ

I’ve talked to so many people who’ve moved their plants from one environment to another, only to watch them struggle or even die.

And somehow, I’ve been blessed to move mine from house to house, inside to outside, through different seasons and spaces, and still watch them thrive beautifully.

It’s made me realize that environment really does matter.

Not just for plants but for us too.

What surrounds you can either support your growth or slowly work against it. What you allow into your environment matters. The people, the energy, the habits, the conversations, the things you consume…they all help cultivate what takes root in you.

Sometimes growth isn’t only about what you’re doing.

Sometimes it’s about where you’re planted and what you’re allowing to grow around you. 🌱

Protect the environment that’s helping you become who you’re meant to be. by @the_gentleroot

ME: Baby, Mommy is building an ecosystem, is that so bad? Respect the vision 🤣

But seriously, it’s not even that bad. I actually don’t even buy plants anymore. I just propagate the ones I have or find.

Grow a plant, and learn from its seed🌱🤣

Me and my SIL are starting a garden finally and I’m excited.šŸ¤ by @the_gentleroot

1. Depth over rushing or short burst of adrenaline enough to full the moment but won’t ever stand a lifetime. I desire to take my time with the things that deserve my attention. The conversation. The relationship. The prayer. The idea. The moment. Not everything meaningful needs to happen quickly.

2. Discernment over saying yes. I don’t look at an empty space in my calendar and assume it needs to be filled. I’ve learned to ask God what belongs there before I decide what to put there or just simply back to see is it necessary for me to fill the space with an event or is the ā€œeventā€ me sitting on my couch, drinking tea and reading a book.

3. The essence and epitomen of enjoying my life. I don’t want to look back and realize I was so busy getting through each season that I forgot to experience it. I want to notice the little things. Take the long way home. Sit outside. Laugh with my kids. Enjoy my tea or drink of choice. Literally let a Tuesday be enough. by @the_gentleroot

Then I remembered that having room on my calendar doesn’t automatically mean I have room in my life.✨

I was talking to someone about this one day, just because it is ā€œopenā€ on your calendar does not mean that you have to fill it.

Those block that you have nothing to do can be blocked off for just you and whatever you want to do. Whether that is to do nothing, schedule out time to read your favorite book or maybe do a favorite hobby. These pocket of times are important. by @the_gentleroot

Don’t let a trigger redefine your healing. 🌱

One day I walked outside and realized a caterpillar had eaten away at one of my plants.

And it made me think about healing.

You can spend months — even years — growing, rebuilding, and becoming healthier, only for one moment, one person, or one situation to come along and trigger something you thought you had already healed from.

But hear me: a trigger does not erase your growth.

Just like that caterpillar eating a few leaves doesn’t change what my plant has become, one difficult moment doesn’t get to redefine who you’ve become either.

You may feel it.
You may have a moment.
You may even need time to recover.

But you are not back at the beginning.

The roots are still there.
The growth still happened.
The healing is still real.

Don’t let one trigger deceive you into believing you haven’t grown.

Protect your roots and keep growing. šŸŒ±šŸ¤Ž by @the_gentleroot
