In December, I’ll be taking over @glebehousedevon, a beautiful Georgian vicarage in Devon for three nights of good books, fireside lounging and festive finery.

Think candlelit dinners, roaring fires, long lunches, misty morning walks, roll-top baths, reading nooks aplenty, and a house dressed in its festive finest.

There’ll be brilliant bookish conversation, delicious seasonal feasting, a curated Christmas reading list and, most importantly, plenty of time to actually read.

A Festive Reading Retreat at Glebe House
1–4 December 2026 · Devon
Seven spots left · fully catered · festive finery included
Private rooms from £1,750 pp · Twin rooms from £1,350 pp

If you’d like to spend a few glorious December days reading, eating, wandering and indulging in some serious yuletide cheer—ideally with a book by the fire, something sparkling in hand, and absolutely no godforsaken Christmas crowds in sight—simply comment below and I’ll DM you the details. ✨ taken in Glebe House Guest House by @the_litedit

When I haven’t been sunbathing, or swimming, or watching the sunrise in Tamarama, or trying (and failing) to understand the difference between direct and indirect object pronouns in Spanish, over the past four weeks in Sydney, I’ve been on the hunt for books, glorious books, for a GLORIOUS hotel project I’m working on in London.

Pictured: a (very, very) small selection of the 50+ books I’ll be hauling back to the UK (via a quick stopover in Paris to see Celine, because what is life if not to be lived?) as part of a hotel library I’ve been busy curating over the last couple of months.

There’s some vintage Dostoyevsky and Dickens, a handful of Georgette Heyer and Storm Jameson, and a little Kate Mosse, Joanne Harris and Doris Lessing thrown in for good measure.

My suitcase is going to weigh approximately 700 kilos, I may well have to leave it in the courtyard of the apartment I’m staying in in Paris rather than risk breaking my back carrying it up the stairs, and who knows how many hours it’s actually going to take me to shelve and style the library, but my goodness, I cannot WAIT to see it all come together 💕 taken in Bondi Beach by @the_litedit

We know there’s truly is nothing I like wanging on about more than books, glorious, books, so it was an utter joy to speak to @sevenmomentsoflove @countryandtownhouse about immersive reading. Lovely to be asked to be asked, rather than simply inflicting unsolicited advice on someone over dinner 😅

The question I get asked most (other than how do I read as much as I do—which is another post entirely) is how to get back into reading when your attention span has been completely repossessed by your phone (guilty). We covered that, reading as a restorative act, and why the book that gets you out of a slump probably isn’t the Russian classic you’ve been avoiding for seven years (having said that though, Crime & Punishment is much more readable than you might think) 🤓

A few snippets above. Posted on Instagram, naturally, where I’m encouraging you to spend less time 😉 taken in Bondi Beach by @the_litedit

@lee_minjin must be the only author alive whose 600+ page book, complete with Very Small Writing, I will GLEEFULLY read, with nary a worry about its size. It was ten years in the making, and suffice it to say that American Hagwon was entirely worth the wait.

Hard to put into words quite what an incredible book this is—it’s utterly unfathomable to me that the characters I’ve spent the last week with don’t actually exist? Because her skill, in building a world so vivid, in the creating of characters you love and characters you loathe, characters whose pain you feel as your own, characters that you will remember for a long time to come, really is second to none. It really does blow my mind.

A masterpiece, an unforgettable book, one that has left me looking at all the other books on my TBR pile and think well what the hell is the point in reading ANYTHING after this, I completely, utterly, wholeheartedly adored it. by @the_litedit

Just ten weeks to go until my gloriously festive reading retreat at the gorgeous @glebehouse 🎄

There’ll be three nights of Yuletide cheer: a sparkling reception, roaring fires, misty morning walks, mulled wine, delicious meals, and a visit from the absolutely glorious @jennie.godfrey. We’ll have festive readings by the fire, plenty of time to curl up with a good book, and all the cosy, Christmassy magic you could hope for.

Join me from 1–4 December for a few days of good books, excellent company and some serious festive fun before the Christmas rush. I would LOVE to have you there ✨

There are three places left. Slide into my DMs or drop me an email on lucy@thelitedit.com if you want in 🎄🥂

As the nights start to draw in here in London I’m thinking back to the magical time I had at @chateaustvictorlacoste with my friend @the_litedit on her reading retreat. I met so many wonderful people there and had such rich experiences, including a masterclass in how to lead a philosophical life from @ac.grayling.9, spending time with @janegreenauthor - who had us all completely spellbound reading from her new memoir Rewilding - and enjoying many wonderful conversations about books and reading. And all in the beautiful surroundings of an ancient chateau, restored and looked after by Alison and Costas who in addition to their extraordinary interior design skills have given it all the magical touches of home. A delight to be in their company and experience such a special place. If all of this sounds enticing then follow @the_litedit and @chateaustvictorlacoste as another reading retreat is planned for next year. And there’s nothing nicer than having good things to look forward to.
