📣 Help Document California’s Legacy Cannabis Genetics

What cultivars helped define your region?

The Legacy Cannabis Genetics project is inviting cultivators, breeders, hashmakers, researchers, patients, historians, and members of California’s cannabis community to participate in our Cultivar Registration Selection Survey.

Through this survey, you’ll help identify cultivars of regional significance from our 2025–2026 field collections for Cultivar Registration—publicly accessible scientific records that combine botanical documentation, herbarium vouchers, provenance information, chemical analysis, and genetic sequencing to document California’s legacy cannabis genetic resources.

Your knowledge matters.

This survey is an opportunity to help preserve the histories, breeding traditions, and community knowledge that have shaped California’s cannabis heritage. Survey responses will be considered alongside research data and input from the project’s Community Advisory Board, to help guide the selection of cultivars for registration.

🌿 Anonymous survey
🌿 Complete only the regions you know best
🌿 Open through August 14

🔗 Take the survey at the link in our bio.

Please help us spread the word by sharing this post with cultivators, breeders, and others who know the legacy genetics of their region.

The recording from the LCG: People and Their Plants, a Community-Driven Study Research Dissemination Event is now available.

〰️

On June 26, researchers, cultivators, breeders, policymakers, regulators, students, advocates, and community members gathered in Sacramento to begin sharing preliminary findings emerging from more than two years of Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR).

The program featured presentations from the interdisciplinary research team, community personnel, and the project’s Community Advisory Board, exploring the project’s CBPR methodology, community engagement, preliminary findings across five research tracks, and emerging public policy recommendations.

Whether you missed the event or would like to revisit the presentations, you can now watch the full recording on the Legacy Cannabis Genetics website.

Thank you to everyone who contributed their time, knowledge, and lived experience to this community-driven effort.

What Will Be Presented at the Research Dissemination Event?

After two years of community-driven research, we’re preparing to share preliminary findings from the Legacy Cannabis Genetics: People and Their Plants project.

This public event will bring together researchers, Community Advisory Board members, cultivators, breeders, historians, advocates, policymakers, and community leaders to explore what we’ve learned about legacy cannabis genetics, the communities that steward them, and the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Presentations will highlight findings from five interdisciplinary research tracks:

🌱 Community-Based Participatory Research
🌱 Ethnography & Political Geography
🌱 Oral Histories
🌱 Herbarium Science
🌱 Plant Genetics

Community Advisory Board members will reflect on emerging themes from the research and discuss what those findings mean for legacy cannabis communities across California.

The event will also explore how research findings may help inform future conversations around:

• Genetic preservation and innovation
• Community stewardship
• Cultural knowledge and memory
• Research and education
• Long-term community participation

Together, we’ll examine questions such as:

❓ What happens when cultivation knowledge is lost?
❓ How do policies influence genetic diversity?
❓ What conditions help communities continue stewarding legacy genetics?
❓ What opportunities exist to support future generations?

We’re honored to introduce the Community Advisory Board (CAB) for the Legacy Cannabis Genetics research project.

We received an overwhelming number of applications for the CAB. The depth of experience, perspective, and commitment reflected across applicants made the selection process incredibly thoughtful and challenging. We’re grateful to everyone who took the time to apply and share their work.

The CAB is a group of 13 advisors from California’s legacy producing regions, with representation across rural, urban, and BIPOC communities.

Together, they bring decades of lived experience across cultivation, breeding, genetics preservation, policy and advocacy, cultural stewardship, education, and community organizing. Their work spans the legacy, medical, and regulated eras of cannabis, with deep roots in the regions and communities that have shaped this plant over time.

Grounded in Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR), the CAB has been meeting regularly to work alongside the research team—helping to synthesize findings, interpret community input, and ensure the research reflects the complexity and nuance of lived experience.

California is considering new restrictions on cannabis marketing through AB 2249, aimed at preventing products that are attractive to children.

Ensuring that cannabis products are not marketed to youth is a critical part of a responsible legal market. At the same time, questions remain about how broadly these restrictions should be applied.

As currently proposed, AB 2249 would significantly expand limitations on imagery used in packaging, branding, and advertising—including the use of people, fruits, and other common elements.

In response, Origins Council, alongside @equitytradenetwork and @the_uca submitted a letter raising concerns about the scope of these restrictions and their potential impact on small and equity operators.

For many small producers, branding is one of the only ways to communicate quality, origin, and differentiation in a market shaped by scale and pricing pressures.

Legacy Cannabis Genetics: People and Their Plants is a DCC-funded, community-driven research project—and we’re proud to be doing this work in partnership with @originscouncil and @the_uca — our lead community-based organizations collaborating with researchers to keep this study rooted in legacy-producing communities across California.

Last month, we opened applications for the project’s Community Advisory Board (CAB), a 13-member group of legacy-producing community members with representation from rural, urban, and BIPOC communities. We received 60+ strong applications from stakeholders across California.

The research team is currently reviewing submissions using the LCG Focus Group guidelines and the project’s established selection process, and we anticipate announcing the final 13 CAB members in the coming weeks.

🌲 We’re honored by the response and looking forward to building this next phase together.
