A Facebook memory of me in the past with a glimpse into my future

“Man this pic just popped up in my Facebook memories! Ten years of curls 🤸🏾‍♀️🤸🏾‍♀️🤸🏾‍♀️ I mostly wore my hair straight back then but every now and again I’d pop out with a curly fro 🤸🏾‍♀️💃🏾. This was such a heartbreaking time though because my mom had just died in October. I have such a love hate relationship with FB memories but this one reminds me to keep going because things will workout better than you can ever imagine.”

This was also my Brooklyn Summer! I spent four months in beautiful Brooklyn, participating in a tech accelerator with the Blue Ridge Lab Fellowship, all thanks to the incredible support of the Robin Hood Foundation.

So picture this: a group of coders, designers, product managers, and subject matter experts coming together to tackle real issues faced by  NYC families in underserved communities. The Blue Ridge Lab Fellowship is not your average tech accelerator—it’s a game-changer. Four months of hustle, innovation, and community-centric vibes.

The Fellowship is fun but hardcore!  It’s all about building healthier futures for families experiencing poverty in NYC. We dove headfirst into the world of tech solutions, exploring how we can bridge gaps in healthcare, mental health, food access, and behavioral outcomes.

Blue Ridge Lab Fellowship isn’t just about the tech, they actually pay you to think!  They provide fellows with a stipend, health insurance, and a research budget all to work on projects that will provide meaningful solutions to communities impacted by poverty.

It was a transformative experience!  It was such an honor to work with such cool, diverse minds committed to community-centered design, with a track record of action on social issues. So, here’s to Brooklyn, to Blue Ridge Lab Fellowship, and to the future we’re building together. Stay tuned, because this is just the beginning! 💻🚀 #BlueRidgeTechJourney #TechForChange #RobinHoodMagic #dowhatyoulove #livealifeyoulove #socialimpact #impactinvestor #thecoolkids #digitalhealth #techbabes #blueridgelabs #robinhoodfoundation #womenintech #workhardplayhard by @the_ungrind

Fun Fact- I love DIY home improvement projects!!! As much as I love a Brooklyn summer, the real reason I come home is to spend time fixing up my childhood home with my big brother. As kids we were up early on weekends helping my dad do home improvement projects. During the week my dad was busy at work but the weekends were ours, he’d spend hours fixing things around the house and since my brother and I were his helpers we’d spend hours learning to fix things around the house. He taught us sooooooo much, he could literally fix anything. After my parents died I wanted nothing to do with the house, if not for my brother I would have sold it. It held too many memories, it was too painful to be there without them. My brother was adamant that we keep it and I’m so grateful we did🙏🏾. When the pandemic locked the world down in 2020 and I had return to the US after my grand exit🤦🏾‍♀️, my brother and I began the slow process of bringing this house back to life! Our first project was to open the pool, it had been closed for at least 15 years. Once my dad got sick so many things had fallen into disrepair, we had our work cut out for us but it has truly been a labor of love. Every summer since 2020 I return home to work down a list of projects to bring this house back to glory. With each project I find remnants of my dad, this year we repaired and repainted the house shingles and I can see the shingles that he repaired so many years ago. I always tell people I leave Kenya because it gets cold in June which is true but every summer I look forward to coming home and working on this old house. This year I spent the summer in Brooklyn but September and October have been all about this old house 🥰. I truly question nothing anymore because without the Covid pause of 2020 I doubt I would’ve fallen in love with house again. I question nothing anymore, my life is beautifully aligned. #theresnoplacelikehome #covidpause #myfamily #theungrind #grateful #doallthingswithlove #diy #doityourself #homeimprovement #home #lifeisbeautiful #memoriesofmyfather #longislandlife taken in Long Island by @the_ungrind

For the first time since I left the US in 2020 and moved to Kenya, I spent my whole entire summer in the great state of BROOKLYN 🤗and it did not disappoint!!! I did all the things! 💃🏾I landed in NY just in time for the Juneteenth celebration in @fortgreenepark founded by @thelayoutco which was crazy! I spent almost every Sunday at the outdoor festival on Tompkins in Bed Stuy @tamabedstuy. I stayed cute💃🏾 because almost everyday there were random block parties for #hiphopturns50. The #jayz exhibit at @bklynlibrary was dope! African Fashion exhibit @brooklynmuseum was everything! The Renaissance concert by @beyonce made my entire summer! I caught up with all of the BKFAM! Had a pool party at the house and closed out the summer at @officialspikelee #mjvsprinceparty. Shoutout to @skinbymamie for keeping my face glowing!!!! Thanks to my good friend @mr.judebernard for letting me stay at #thetraphouse!🤗 I hope you enjoyed my love letter to BROOKLYN! There is truly no place like home. #mylovelettertobrooklyn #brooklyn #clintonhill #bedstuy #summer #latepost #toomanyfolkstotag taken in Brooklyn, New York by @the_ungrind

Sorry for all these nostalgic posts but this last trip to Rwanda reminded me of how far I’d come and I just thought I’d share my journey. 1. In Sept 2017, I took this pic during a @yachtweekea_ trip and captioned it “In two years this will be my view”. I kept this picture as my screensaver so every time I opened my phone I saw my dream 2. 2018 I downloaded Pimsleur app and began to learn Swahili on my way to work. 3. 3/19 Made a 2nd trip to TZ to see if I could really live there alone without friends or family
4. 4/19Hit up my network for help making the career transition to global health.🤗thank you.
5. 6/19Back to TZ for a medical mission with HEAD, Inc. 6. 11/19 Rwanda for Women Leaders in Global Health. Met Paul Farmer from PIH he encouraged me to apply for the Harvard GH program. 7. 1/20 Going Away Skate Party 8. 2/20 Quit my job and moved to TZ. 9. 3/20 Covid 🤬 on a flight back home. Slept on the couch at my brother’s house for 7 months. HEAD mission cancelled.GH projects were on hold, my best laid plans were ruined. People were dying. 🙏🏾It was a mess. I felt like a failure.
10. Although I finished the Harvard program virtually, the covid pause had given me time to really think. I realized I was recreating my same life in another country. Global Health corporate structure looked a lot like American corporate structure and the Covid pause gave me time to reflect and step away. I’ve taken steps to design a life I truly love. I’m running out of space so I’ll break that down on another post but this is part of my story. #theungrind #livealifeyoulove #happyme #moveinsilence by @the_ungrind

I know my IG looks like good vibes and sunshine but it wasn’t always this way. There was a long period of time in my life that I was straight miserable. One day I just decided enough was enough and took action to change my life.

I grieved the death of my parents, lost love, broken friendships and burdens that are mine to carry. I made my peace with all of it and let it go.

I prayed.
I met with a shaman in Sedona.
I cried A LOT!
I read books on happiness, healing, spirituality, relationships and god.
I blew bubbles, hula hooped, attended soundbaths, hiked, took divine feminine classes.
I did another spiritual retreat in Sedona.
I traveled everywhere Thailand, Cuba, Tanzania, Ghana and a ton of other countries.
I took accountability for where I was problematic.
I made new friends.
I softened.
I asked for help.
I became a better person, a better friend, a better human.
I removed myself from toxic people, places and things.
I stopped being toxic!
If I can’t bring good vibes then I don’t go.
I stopped staring at a closed door and found an open window.
These days I absolutely love my life but I never want anyone to think that I hopped on a plane and moved to Africa (Tanzania/Kenya) and all was well with the world.
If I didn’t do all of the inner work I would have been miserable me in another country.
I am a super private person and putting my life out on social media makes my skin crawl but I know someone can use these breadcrumbs to find their own way to their happy place. Your journey may not look exactly like mine but I’m just here to show you how I found my way to a life that I love. I hope this helps someone. 🥰🤗🤸🏾‍♀️Please keep trying, life is far too short to be anything other than happy.

This weekend my favorite doctor and personal ob/gyn @dr.kristina_sule celebrated 3 years in private practice. The @alloramedicalpractice party was a whole vibe and packed with amazing, inspiring women but I would expect nothing less from Dr.Sule.
