On my first academic publication

This milestone wouldn’t exist without the people who believed in me and made space for me to grow.

Thank you to Prof. Mrs. Sakpere, my undergraduate supervisor. You allowed me to step outside Botany and carry out my undergraduate project in the Faculty of Pharmacy. Without your permission and trust, this work wouldn’t have been conceived.

Thank you to Prof. Mojisola Cyril-Olutayo for taking me in and giving me a platform to pursue sickle cell research. You went above and beyond to ensure this work was completed despite the challenges, and you saw it through to publication. I’m deeply grateful for your mentorship.

To my friends Basheet and Praise — especially Praise — thank you for standing with me through it all. And to Mummy Edwards, thank you for helping me handle my rats in the animal house near the OAU mortuary. Seriously… _“how I for do?”_ without you.

🎉 I Found My Path — and It’s Just the Beginning!

When I began my journey as a sickle cell disorder advocate, I was completely clueless about what I was getting into. I often asked myself: “Is this just a hobby born from personal pain, or have I truly stepped into a career path?”

That question led me on a search for clarity. I began to seek knowledge — reading, watching, listening — and slowly, the fog lifted. I realized this wasn’t just a passion project. It was purpose. It was leadership. It was a career path rooted in advocacy, impact, and transformation.

But purpose alone is not enough. If my vision for sickle cell advocacy was going to thrive, I knew I had to build a nonprofit that would last — and that meant committing to continuous learning.

That commitment led me to apply to the Nonprofit Leadership and Management (NPLM) Youth Academy, hosted by the Sustainability Centre at Lagos Business School @lbsnigeria .

Today, I’m proud to say I’ve completed 9 incredible weeks of intensive learning, strategy, and leadership development — fully sponsored by the Ford Foundation, who found me worthy of a full scholarship. 🙏🏽💜

From governance and sustainability to financial planning and fundraising, this journey has sharpened my vision and prepared me to build stronger, bolder, and more sustainable impact through the Aghogho Sickle Cell Care Foundation.

To every young person with a changemaking idea but no clue where to begin — I see you. I was you.

You were there when I was just starting this sickle cell advocacy journey, when the vision was still so small, and I was figuring things out along the way. And now, years later, you were there again, standing with me at an exhibition for a comic book I created through this journey.

Having you there meant more to me than I can properly put into words.

I almost didn't show up.

AYAC had started, and I was in so much pain. For a moment, I genuinely wondered if I should just stay back.

But I kept thinking about the work, the comic, the exhibition, and everything it took to get there.

So I showed up.

And honestly? AYAC was one of the most beautiful experiences I've had with this work.

People stopped. People asked questions. People supported. People connected with the message.

But one moment stood out for me—the Senior Youth Pastor visited our exhibition stand, listened to what we were doing, and was genuinely impressed by the work.

That moment meant so much to me.

Because sometimes, before you enter a room, you imagine all the reasons why your work may not be accepted.

And then you walk in and realize—there was room for your work all along.

AYAC, thank you for the opportunity to show up. ❤️

In 2023, at AYAC, I was praying and believing for a change of story.

I wanted to be empowered. I wanted to build something meaningful. I wanted to see the things I carried in my heart become reality.

Today, three years later, I’m coming back to AYAC with something to show for the journey. 🥹❤️

And this time, I have an exhibition stand!
