Award-winning creative writing workshops in Bath and online. New courses starting in March and April, and our weekly online session continues! 📝📚

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

After a long break, I'm dipping my toes back in the waters of instagram to share some news with you.

A gentle shift of focus means I'm putting The Writing Set on pause for now. In its place, I'm exploring a writing and teaching practice that's more rooted in place - weaving together words, nature and women's heritage.

If you'd like to come on this journey with me, please can I ask you to follow @joannerushcreative. I'll be leaning into the countryside around me, and thinking through what we can learn from the paths and crafts o the past. There will be new workshops in September, and lots of creative invitations before then. Thank you so much for all your support so far.

I am delighted to announce that my wonderful publisher Honno Press has put forward my novel Dancing on Knives for the Booker Prize long list! Roughly 150,000 novels get published in the UK every year, and about 150 get nominated (more or less one from each publisher) to be read by the judges for the final long list. Fingers crossed! 🤞🏻

Calling all Writers in Bath & North East Somerset!

I am really pleased to share this opportunity for a FREE 2-week Summer Residency programme at the beautiful Emerge Studio in Bath. Funded by Culture West, this residency is especially designed for those with no formal training in the arts or from low income backgrounds. To apply, visit @emergeinbath and follow the links in their bio.

Are you keen to spend some time on your writing? Or do you know someone who is? Please help me to get the word out by sharing this post with your networks. The deadline for applications is 2nd June, so we have a short window to reach as many people as possible.

About the Creative Writing Micro-Residency:
Monday 23rd June to Friday 4th July (excluding the weekend)
The Creative Writing Micro Residency is a two-week opportunity for early stage writers. Whether you are a complete beginner or looking to reconnect with your craft after a break, this enjoyable and practical residency is designed to give you the tools you need to achieve your personal goals.

The residency offers dedicated time and space to explore new techniques. You'll learn about traditional rules (and when to break them), find out how celebrated writers achieve their effects, and try out exercises designed to hone your attention and develop your voice. Above all, you’ll move at your own pace and explore your own interests, within a friendly group of other writers.

Guided by novelist and poet @joannerushbooks, short story writer Claire Carroll, and actor and writer Joe Topping, participants will engage in a blend of taught sessions, reflective exercises, self-led writing and supportive group critiques. The residency will culminate in an afternoon of readings and celebration, providing an opportunity to share work in a welcoming and supportive space.

And best of all, it’s completely free! To find out more, or to apply, go to @emergeinbath and follow the links in their bio.

GOOD NEWS FOR NON EARLY BIRDS!

From April onwards, by popular demand, our weekly online writing workshop ‘A Writing Life’ will take place BOTH on Thursday afternoons (1:30-2:30pm) and on Friday mornings (7:30-8:30am). This means that all our ‘A Writing Life’ sessions will now be repeated twice, first on Thursday and again on Friday of the same week.

These energising online workshops are based on a new theme each week, and filled with imaginative creative writing prompts. Take the opportunity to be guided through new ideas and approaches by internationally recognised novelist and poet Joanne Rush, and to get feedback on your writing if you want it. Drawing inspiration from literature, art and nature, our hour-long sessions are a perfect way of introducing more creativity into a busy life.

The meeting link you receive when you sign up will work for both sessions - simply choose which one suits you best! Try your first session for free by visiting our website at thewritingset.co.uk/a-writing-life and using the code FREEFIRSTSESSION

This week's 'A Writing Life', our Friday morning online class, is about how writers use the sense of touch - from a tiny jewel of a poem in a 1960s New Yorker magazine about how it feels to be sad at midnight, to a pandemic poem by American poet laureate Ada Limon.

Inspired by Italian writer Italo Calvino’s wonderful novel If On a Lonely Night a Traveller, we’ll also think about how where we read – and what we write with – affects our experience of stories.

“Great characters say for us what we deeply feel but can’t find words for. Your story should expose us to someone special.”

The first session of our intermediate creative writing course, DEVELOP YOUR STORY, is all about character depth and character arcs. How do you create a character that people root for? How can you ensure they grow and change across the course of your short story or novel?

If you live near Bath and have an idea for a story – or a manuscript already on the go – why not come along to our 6 week intermediate creative writing course, starting on Thursday 27th March? To sign up or learn more, follow the link in our bio or visit thewritingset.co.uk/develop-your-story

“You want all your scenes to have a ‘because’ between them, not an ‘and then’. We are meaning makers. Our brains struggle with ‘and then.’”
Aline Bosh Mckenna, screenwriter of The Devil Wears Prada

The second session of DEVELOP YOUR STORY - our Bath-based course for intermediate writers – is all about planning, shaping and pacing your plot.

The aim of this course is to help anyone who is working on or interested in starting their first novel or short story to navigate the writing process. Learn from the mistakes made by The Writing Set’s tutors in their first stories, and profit from a carefully curated selection of examples and advice from famous writers. Take your writing seriously, and be ambitious about where it might lead!

When? Starting on 27th March and running on Thursday evenings, 6-8pm, for 6 weeks
How much? £200, with concessions available.

Poetry is a craft in two senses: it does something magical with language, and it’s a skill that can be learnt. Join internationally published poet Joanne Rush with @curiousmindsfest for a gentle and friendly workshop that aims to take some of the mystery out of writing poems… without losing any of the mystique!

Perhaps you’ve never written a poem before and you’re curious to try something new? Or perhaps you start writing but struggle to finish? We guarantee that you’ll go home with five new poems, and some new friends too.

Don’t worry if you’ve never been to a creative writing workshop before. All you need is a pen and a notebook, and we’ll have both available if you forget. Feel free to stay afterwards and ask anything you like – all questions are good questions!

To sign up, visit

We love writing that leans into smell: the glorious scents wafting from coffee shops and perfumed wrists, the awful whiffs from rubbish yards or worse…

This Friday morning, our online class 'A Writing Life' will turn to brilliant writers like Patrick Süskind as we think about how to get smell on the page!

Join our FREE monthly writing club at Kingsmead Street Bottle! Working on our own projects in the company of other creative people can ignite our love of writing and transform what we write. Whether you want to explore a new idea in a friendly space, or set aside some time to get those words on the page, why not give it a try?

The format is simple: we start with a quick check-in to share what we’re working on, followed by an hour of focused, quiet writing, and wrap up by reflecting on how it went. This month, we’re also celebrating local talent! If you’ve published a book or pamphlet, bring a copy along to share what it’s about and where others can find it.

Join us on Wednesday, March 19th, at 5:30-6.45 pm for an inspiring hour of writing and connection. The session is completely free, but please support our lovely host venue by purchasing a drink.

Sign up at our website: thewritingset.co.uk/free-writing-club.
