What does ‘homeless’ actually mean? 🤔

When we think of homelessness, many of us picture people sleeping rough on the streets, huddled in doorways, or living in tents or emergency shelters.

But homelessness doesn’t always look like this.

There are many forms of homelessness, and some are hidden from view. People may be sofa-surfing, living in unsafe or unstable accommodation, or facing the very real possibility of having nowhere left to go.

At Amber, we support young adults experiencing homelessness in all its forms. Many of the young people who come to us have been sleeping rough, while others arrive just before their circumstances reach crisis point.

We have included these stats in our Impact Report for 2026 which shows the situation admissions were in immediately before coming to Amber. The top three were...

27% were sleeping rough,
24% were sofa surfing,
23% were living with family (but things were breaking down).

Whatever their situation, our goal is the same; to help every individual to address their challenges, build confidence and develop the skills they need to move towards a brighter, more stable future. A future free of the fear of homelessness. 🧡

Our supported housing centres are based in Devon, Wiltshire, Surrey and Kent, and we accept referrals from across the UK for young people aged 18–30* who need support to turn their lives around.

Because homelessness isn’t always visible but everyone deserves a safe place to call home. 🏡

*We may also be able to support 16–17 year olds in certain circumstances. by @theamberfoundation

Last weekend, 15 runners completed the Goodwood Half Marathon on the world-famous Goodwood Motor Circuit, home to the @goodwoodfestivalofspeed and @goodwoodrevival at the foot of the Sussex Downs. 🏃‍♀🏃🏃🏾‍♂️🏃🏼‍♂️🏃🏾‍♀️

5 of the runners from one of Amber's corporate partners @foundryfit Cobham with Jack being the fastest of the group coming in 7th overall with a time of 01:23:57. 💨

It was a great atmosphere on the day and the runners appreciated the Amber cheer squad!

The amount raised is approaching £13,000 - a phenomenal amount for Amber's work supporting young people facing homelessness to move forward to better, brighter futures.

A day at @devoncountrypursuits!

Young people and staff from Ashley Court, our Devon centre, had a (nearly) whole house day out having a go at Archery and Laser Tag. 🧡

These days out are about more than just having fun as they also help young people build relationships with others as well as being opportunities to build their confidence and try new things. by @theamberfoundation

A huge thank you to The Nailbox who are supporting us with various fundraising activities between now and Christmas. 👏

Some of the Downsview staff team went along to their fantastic quiz night and had a great time.

If you are local to Folkestone we recommend heading along for the next one on the 9th November.

Thank-you so much to Nathan from @pippins_community_centre who came to Ashley Court, our #Devon centre, last week to deliver a lived experience talk. 🧡

Nathan spoke about his recovery journey and how he has rebuilt his life after addiction including how he is now helping others!

It is so helpful and inspiring for the young adults at our centres to hear these stories.
👏

Today, 10th October, is both #WorldHomelessDay and #WorldMentalHealthDay. Two issues that are, of course, inextricably linked.

💔 Mental health struggles can lead to homelessness

💔 Homelessness or living in insecure housing is often catastrophic for someone’s mental health.

But there is hope for a life after homelessness and mental health struggles as we can see from the young people who moved on from Amber centres this year.

Here are just a few quotes… 😊

Nathan – “If it wasn’t for Amber I would probably still be homeless. No one else could help me. Amber literally saved my life.”

Ethan – “When I arrived, I didn’t know what to expect... But I quickly saw how Amber could help me change my life for good.”

Josh – “When you first arrive at Amber it may feel like a step back, but it’s a step back to move 10 steps forward.”

Corie – “Looking back on my time at Amber I feel there is an astronomical difference between who I was when I arrived and who I am now I am ready to leave.”

Kayleigh – “Being at Amber has helped me find myself again... it is a protective bubble but a bubble I needed. Now I am ready to pop it and start back in the world.”

Sam – “Without Amber I would be lost. With no purpose, no hope, no drive and no perspective. Without Amber, there wouldn’t be Sam.”

Briony – “I wouldn’t be feeling so hopeful without Amber’s help. Without it I think I’d be on the streets, drinking heavily and struggling badly.”

If you know a young person (aged 18-30) professionally or personally who needs support, please do reach out. We have supported housing centres in Devon, Wiltshire, Surrey and Kent and accept referrals from across the country. by @theamberfoundation

A lot of the young people at Amber have poor dental hygiene and have not been able to visit a dentist regularly.

So we are delighted that @dentaidthedentalcharity will now be visiting Farm Place, our Surrey centre, every few months to give the young people dental check ups, maintenance and hygienist cleans. 👏🏽

One said "I had a complete check-up, had some work done and a really deep clean on my teeth. They feel really good! Thank you so much!" 😁 by @theamberfoundation

Amber's Surrey centre Farm Place held their annual open morning as part of Mole Valley's Arts Alive 🎨

This year's theme was Life at Amber 🧡 the young people made artworks which were displayed in their team rooms. They also baked cupcakes, brownies, cheese straws as well as homemade lemonade 🍋 and freshly squeezed orange juice 🍊

Thank you to everyone who came to find out a little more about how Amber supports young people to transform their lives. taken in Surrey by @theamberfoundation
