AMERICAN VERMIN won a prize at @fantastic.fest that the judges CREATED in deliberations…WHAT?!!! We just wanted to be in the room, we never expected to win anything. So when @catherinehardwicke announced we’d won a camera package from @blackmagicdesign (presented by @fangoria!) PLUS she and the other judges (Gore Verbinski and PLAY HOUSE’s @nicolascurcio and @kirbygladstein!!!) had decided to mentor us for a year, the sound that comes out of @theanniejacob’s lungs in this video (peep @_alexbock_’s adorable reaction) is what would have come out of mine if the announcement didn’t knock the wind right out of me. I think the judges were moved to enlist in the VERMIN army by our protagonist Lupe, a Latina asylum seeker and badass final girl ready to kick some U.S. Army ass as the setting reveals a much-needed history lesson. And if anyone’s not ready for Lupe…our mutant cockroaches will show them the way. 😈🪳

HUGE congrats to the winning team @joshfarnworth and @connnormartinn with their amazing terrifying evil dad getting revenge at a wedding project FATHER FIGURE! Those guys are so ready to deliver and I can’t wait to see the result of next year’s whirlwind.

This is truly the most otherworldly thing that has (and probably will ever) happen in my career! We are making this movie, and it’s gonna pack a gargantuan double-whammy punch of pure entertainment and potent social commentary due to the creative investment of all those above.

So much gratitude to @chroma_presents and @fantasticfest for creating this indie genre film rocket launcher. Thank you for making this happen @ahbracadabra, @edenbliss, @beverage_sam, and so many more. Thank you to @jordanbastian and Eden for your unwavering support and mentorship. We love you all and everything you’re doing for the indie genre community. You’re gonna save cinema!!!

This is from 2023, but documenting this had reminded me how little labors with love with a great community add up to a beautiful picture for the future. Post pandemic has been riddled with so much loss, incurable diagnoses, and grief. I say this cuz so many of you share in this especially this last year. I’m so tired. I’ve heard so many of you say the same. This is more of a reminder to myself:
Grief has taught me, time is finite, what you do with it matters and how you love matters. Surround yourself with pple who pour love, joy, & understanding into you as you do to them. Don’t forget to rest, call up your loved ones, and share a meal, share tea, stretch together, play pickle ball (no idea where that came from) whatever you love to do, do it together. And with that family you built for yourself, take just a minute or two to make a difference in your community. Whether it’s writing a letter, volunteering with a non-profit, boycotting, investing consciously, raising awareness, do it with your bridge club or whatever your community is.
History sometimes mentions a few leaders who made a big difference but they don’t talk about the large masses and communities who fought together even in small ways for a better today. I don’t want to be another generation that lived during a time that later our history books write abt with regret, like Laos who was b*mbed for 8 yrs straight by the US and to this day suffers, finding them everywhere.
I believe in humanity, all of us space farts as my bro Rajeev lovingly calls us, are capable of so much, starting with loving ourselves. In the words of @leslieodomjr , show ‘em you’ve been loved, show em how they loved you, live forever in a love that’s always alive
Ok that’s enough sap for the rest of the year out of me.
Merry New Years Eve ya wild beautiful people!

GOOD BAD PEOPLE at @iamkennyleon ‘s
True Colors Theater (Southwest Arts Center) til Mar 12th
Truly grateful for the warm opening weekend and for your patience til we see you again next week!
This is a special team that put in so much love and labor into bringing @chelalyn89 ‘s play to life.
I’m honored to be part of a story that weaves the complexity of family, grief, culture, accountability and racial issues into a dark comedy (safe to laugh, pls do). We cried, we laughed, we loved
and I was reminded to cherish every moment, hold on to those you love and speak up for those who can’t
🙏🏾 to everyone who can share this experience with me

that time I felt fancy recovering from surgery, thanks to brown designers at @sani . Around the holidays I found out I had stage IV endometriosis, THANKFULLY only lost my appendix. RIP lil dude. I drew the lucky card of having a difficult recovery and had to cancel a project. But I’m fine now!
1 out of 10 women have endo, a google search isn’t enough as symptoms vary from person to person. Thankful for @endofound ‘s work, a great source for info and helped me prep for surgery. Endometriosis actually can be fatal as tissue can block organ function. So Please Please talk to your doctors, PAINFUL PERIODS ARE NOT NORMAL.
We women are strong as hell, but it ain’t normal to be going thru so much pain, it’s not in your head.
Thankful to Dr Kongoasa at @rhmgynecology for talking sense into me and helping me realize my diagnosis and the importance of treating it.

Looking for a movie to watch with your Thanksgiving crew?
ALEXIS LOUDER is a Queen of a lead, making ATL proud, in @copshopmovie !
She is so strong and badass in every scene, outgunning her male counter parts!
Thanks to @carnojoe for making a strong black woman the center of a great action film! @alexislouder is an example of hard work paying off, she is so detailed (annoyingly sometimes) and it shows in the film, from her nails to character choices, she brings it all! I’m so proud and blessed to know this loud boss woman who looks flawless even on FaceTime (🙄).
** DISCLAIMER - LOUD SCREAMING AND HIGH PITCH CELEBRATION IN VIDEOS **
Last video is from so long ago, but represents how she finds joy in everything, even when things don’t go as planned.
I’m telling you, I’ve seen Copshop 5 times already and it’s great, EVERYTIME!
So glad @carnojoe and @sharonbialy have a great eye for casting💛 taken in BOSS by @theanniejacob

❗️Also, I appreciate & love all the messages/ comments of excitement and how meaningful seeing an American of South Asian descent being repped in Hollywood is🤎
Here’s just a few people who’ve made an impact and made my existing in this space much easier.

• People may forget who won the accolades and awards 100 years from now, but future generations will live a better life from the change we make today! •
So excited for the next generation especially with groups like @pardesi.blog & @unravelingtheworldpodcast having important discussions❗️
