This is Betty.

"Betty has now passed away, but she was our house chicken for 2 years. She came to us with her friends via @freshstart4hens and after she had outlived her buddies and we weren’t in the position to adopt more hens, we decided to bring her inside. She was wonderful, she’d watch TV and hang out with the cats. All in all, she was rad. She passed in my arms, safe in her living room at the ripe old age of nearly 8 years old."

“Nearly 14 years ago, I found Baudie, a tiny, desperately ill pigeon, sitting alone in a pot plant outside a nightclub in Melbourne. I took her home thinking I could at least give her somewhere safe and warm to spend her final days.

Against all odds, she survived. She's the toughest, bravest little creature I've ever met, the light of my life and my tiny boss.

After 20 years of vegetarianism, watching Baudie lay her unfertilised eggs and lovingly care for them was the moment everything clicked. Seeing her maternal instincts and the care she gave her eggs made me think differently about the hens whose eggs I was still eating. It was the turning point that made me finally become vegan.

Baudie completely changed my life. Everything I do is really for her.”

People assume that to go vegan is to go without. After all, they may have only heard that veganism is a diet and that it requires an incredible amount of abstinence. Denying yourself of meat, dairy, eggs, leather, wool, silk and any cosmetic products they may be used to buying without a care as to how they were made or whether they were cruelly tested on animals.

I used to think that too.

But the truth is that veganism is a philosophy. It's not about personal gain or what is to be lost. Their flesh and bodily secretions were never yours to sacrifice begin with. They were stolen.

For my painting 31 rescue animals in October challenge, up next is my very own love of my life, the old, crispy Cherry Pie.

Despite craving ~ v i o l e m c e ~, Cherry is indeed full of love, but only on HER terms. And since she had such a rough start in life and struggled to find a safe home, we have no idea if her pure sassiness and ability to state her boundaries so clearly comes as a result of that or because of it.

We adopted her from the shelter at two years old after she'd just recovered from a skin condition. She lightly bit me upon our first interaction but I knew she was the one. Since then she's had multiple health issues costing thousands and we discovered she had a broken rib from when she was a kitten. She underwent radioactive iodine treatment last year for hyperthyroidism and I'm so incredibly happy she's overcome absolutely everything the world has thrown at her. We like to joke her rage fuels her ever onward. She really is a scared little kitten, despite her age as she creeps up to about 14 years old now.

So here she is, in all her glory, the fiercely angry and just as fiercely loving, the icon and diva - Cherry Pie.
