As this month comes to a close, we’re celebrating Latiné Heritage Month by highlighting the stories, cultures, and experiences that shape our community. 💛💙

We sat down with two Latiné-endorsed senators and our External Affairs Vice President to reflect on their heritage, the traditions that connect them to their roots, and how their identities shape their experiences at UC Berkeley.

The ASUC Communications Office and Office of the Vice President of External Affairs are excited to announce that we will be hosting a Meet the Candidates Forum for the upcoming Berkeley city council race! 🌟🐻🌟 Students are invited to attend the session and will be able to ask questions, meet their prospective representatives, and mingle with candidates. The event will be held in 105 North Gate Hall on October 23rd from 4-6pm, RSVP and submit any questions you’d like to ask the candidates at the link below. Hii everyone!! My name is Selina Mendez! I’m a first generation Latina born and raised in Santa Ana California and I serve this year as your External Affairs Vice President! 💜🪻

Through my position as EAVP I also sit on the board of Directors for UCSA working with all 9 undergraduate EVP’s across the UC system where we all advocate directly to the UC regents. Our office serves as the advocate for Berkeley students at the local, state, and federal level and serve as the bridge to external opportunities and organizations to Berkeley students! We’re rooted in civic engagement, community relations and advocacy! Our office has 9 departments that are dedicated to bringing events such as candidate forums, VoteChella, Lobbying days, and make other UCSA programming available for Berkeley.

My experience in the ASUC started with the Office of the President, under the Calthon Department, then I served as the DEIB & Calthon Executive in OP my sophomore year. Had the honor to serve as one of the Latine community endorsed senators last year and now am your External Affairs Vice President! We’re always open to collaborating with students and organizations!

Hey Bears,
My name is Dylan Lucks, and I am serving as the ASUC Academic Affairs Vice President this year. I grew up in Oakland, California (yeah, right next door & shout out the 510), so Berkeley has always felt like home. Our office primarily focuses on Academic Policy and Campus Affairs, anything from in-the-classroom policy, degree requirements, and academic rules, to admissions, to Student Fees. We connect all of this by appointing the various academic committees on campus, meeting with administrators on academic issues, working to make Berkeley’s complicated system easier for you to navigate, and making sure the student voice reaches the people making decisions.

Our biggest goal this year is to make our office more transparent and visible, so students know what we’re working on behind the scenes and how to get involved. We’re also focused on:
• Clear and transparent AI policies in the classroom
• Getting students into the classes they need, plus additional late drops
• Equity in standardized testing
• Improving the academic experience for International and Transfer Students, including protecting internship access (CPT)
