Had the night of my dreams last night…

I got to watch the Tony’s with some of the most wonderful friends (peep my hand-felted Tony Award, I’d like to thank my felting needles). And then I got to meet some of my heroes. I don’t have all the words I want to say at the ready, but what I will say is that the incredible people involved with Suffs are paving the way for a more inclusive Broadway and I could not be more excited to be even a small part of that movement. The biggest congrats to the incredible Ally and Hawley; I feel lucky to call you my friends. And to the women I’ve looked up to for years, thank you. Keep marching, y’all. taken in New York, New York by @theatricallysam

When I was in high school, a friend showed me @sarabareilles’s song Gravity. I played it on repeat for hours; I hadn’t experienced the kind of love she was talking about in the song, but it still resonated deeply with me.

In college, I was cast in a nonverbal performance to Manhattan. Shortly after the performance, my first serious boyfriend and I broke up. I was at NYU at the time and he was back home; the song comforted me.

Spring 2016, the lowest point for my mental health, I was driving home and She Used to Be Mine came on the radio. It wasn’t the Broadway version, but the What’s Inside version. I pulled over to the side of the road and wept. I felt more seen than I’d ever been, grieving for the person I had known; once again, Sara Bareilles had described my feelings.

I saw Waitress so many times on Broadway. I sang King of Anything, Love Song, all the aforementioned songs and more at karaoke, at concerts, on Instagram. Somehow, this woman who I’d never met could put words to emotions when I couldn’t. I was lucky enough to hear her sing “She Used to Be Mine” from the second row at the Capitol in October on 2022 and sobbed like the first time I’d heard the song.

This Saturday, I attended her concert at @lctheater, in collab with the @strangersproj. I got there early, wandered around reading all the stories and crying. Somehow in a room of strangers’ stories, I felt so full. I felt protected. I didn’t feel alone. I stood right in the front by the piano held my spot, chatting with the stranger next to me. By the time Sara came out to perform, we weren’t strangers anymore.

It made me think about music's power to inspire empathy. It’s been a tough summer and somehow, once again, just when I needed her, Sara dropped her newest album, titled “Good Grief”. It was just what I needed to hear.

I wrote this song because I feel a deep gratitude to this woman who hasn't met me but somehow understands me. Sara likely will never hear this song, but in case she somehow does, I hope she knows that I’m not the only one who feels this gratitude to her. I hope she knows that she's making a difference with her art, that she's helping so many find the good in their grief. by @theatricallysam

“Dear Bill, Say Something”

Our submission for @jakmalone_’s #JaksFanArtClub is a story of many worlds colliding. One of our favorite shows is @mincemeatbway and one of Sam’s favorite artists is @agreatbigworld. We had created this musical mashup for our Broadway Boombox show in 2025 and were so excited for the opportunity to revisit it, complete with Sam’s first foray into animation.

Featuring our voices, this collaboration is in many ways many worlds colliding. It’s not just the Mincemeat/A Great Big World collision; it’s a representation of our collaboration, which is in many ways a collision in its own right. Though we came from different backgrounds, different worlds, we somehow found each other. We feel so lucky to have collided with each other, with these songs, and with art.

Here’s to more. by @theatricallysam

Happy Pride to all our LGBTQ+ friends!!! After being inspired by a little hockey show, we’ve been cooking up a little surprise and we’re so excited to release it today! We continue to be grateful for art that celebrates queer joy and love, especially in times where so many want to squash those truths. To anyone who sees this, we hope you know that you can always find solace and comfort with us. We hope you continue to find sunshine in your lives and we hope you know that you are sunshine to someone else as well.

With immense gratitude to Uriah Roman (who has the most incredible eye), Madison Roberts (for the stunning looks in this video), Melony Reyes (for bringing light to the screen), Royal Family Productions (for hosting us in your beautiful space), and to Tanner Hodson (our multi-hyphenate artistic wonder, without whom none of this would be possible).

TW: su!c!de, mental health struggles

It’s been ten years since I was diagnosed as bipolar.

In 2016, I wanted to stop living. The world felt like it was too much, too fast, too loud, too overwhelming. Every night before I went to sleep, I would tell myself that it would be okay if I didn’t wake up the next day, that my loved ones would be sad but they would ultimately be better without me. I literally said those words so often that it became almost ritual to me. I wasn’t actively looking to do anything drastic, but it was always on my mind.

I remember telling my parents that I needed help, professional help, which they immediately sprung into action finding. The first thirty minutes with my new psychiatrist, I was almost in a dissociative state, but shortly after, I found myself sobbing. My psychiatrist told me at the end that she was going to give me a possible diagnosis that would seem scary and that she would continue to evaluate me over the next weeks.

I thought I would feel panic at having such a clinical and stigmatized label, and I sort of did, but I also felt an immense sense of relief. Other people felt these ever-present cloudy thoughts too? And they lived past their twenties? I was suddenly hopeful.

The past ten years have not been easy and I honestly don’t know if the next ten will be easier; life has a cruel way of adapting alongside you. But that’s the thing: I’m also adapting. I’m growing and learning and pushing boundaries and enforcing limits within myself. I want to wake up in the morning, even though sometimes I can’t leave my bed until nighttime. I’m constantly working on drawing back the veil that my brain wants to put in place; I’m constantly looking for the sunflowers.

I look back at the Sam from 2016 and I truly don’t know if they’d believe that we’d be where we are. Alive. It’s been a tough week, but I’m still alive and I’m happy that I am.

I owe my life to those of you who’ve supported me over the past ten years. I wouldn’t be here without my psychiatrist, without Four Winds, without my family and friends. It’s Mental Health Awareness Month in 2026 and I’m astounded and so very grateful to be here.
