🎶 “Workin’ 9 to 5”🐾💙

In honor of Dolly Parton Day, we thought we’d give you a little peek at a day in the life of Kuzco, our very own working facility dog!

His 9 to 5 may look a little different than most … comforting children, sitting quietly beside someone who needs a friend, lending a paw to our staff, and bringing a little extra joy wherever he goes. 🐾

Dolly Parton has spent a lifetime reminding us of the power of kindness, generosity, and giving children opportunities to dream. Today, we hope you’ll consider celebrating her legacy by making a donation to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, the Barrie Center, or a charity that is special to you. 💙

Because whether you have two legs or four, there’s always a little work we can do to make our community better.

Kuzco’s 9 to 5: Protecting children. Supporting people. Spreading hope. As Dolly said “ find out who you are, and do it on purpose!” 🐾

Happy Birthday to the very best boy, Kuzco! 🐾🎉 Every day at the Barrie Center, you do more than wag your tail and give cuddles… you bring comfort during hard moments, calm during fear, and love when it’s needed most.

To so many children walking through these doors, you are a safe place. A friend. A source of hope, healing, and justice. 💙

Thank you for the joy you bring, the gentle care you give, and the countless hearts you help mend just by being YOU.

The children, families, and staff are all better because of your sweet spirit. Happy Birthday, Kuzco! We love you!🦴🎉💙

Today and every day, we are grateful for the children and families that we serve, the bravery and courage that they show every day, and the community that stands beside them through it all.

Thank you for helping us bring hope, healing, and safety to every child who walks through our doors. We truly could not do the work that we do here without the continued support we receive from our community.🧡🍂 by @thebarriecenter

New schools, new teachers, and new routines can bring anxiety.
Here are signs your child might be overwhelmed:

🚩 Headaches or stomachaches
🚩 Trouble sleeping
🚩 Mood swings
🚩 Avoiding school-related activities

Support starts with a conversation: “How are you feeling about going back to school?” 💬

Riding the school bus for the first time is a big step for a child. Help your kids get a gold star in school bus safety by following these tips. 🚌

Top Tips for Riding the Bus:

Walk with your young kids to the bus stop and wait with them until it arrives. Make sure drivers can see the kids at your bus stop.

Teach kids to stand at least three giant steps back from the curb as the bus approaches and board the bus one at a time.

Teach kids to wait for the school bus to come to a complete stop before getting off and not to walk behind the bus.

If your child needs to cross the street after exiting the bus, he or she should take five giant steps in front of the bus, make eye contact with the bus driver and cross when the driver indicates it’s safe. Teach kids to look left, right and left again before crossing the street.

Slow down and stop if you’re driving near a school bus that is flashing yellow or red lights. This means the bus is either preparing to stop (yellow) or already stopped (red), and children are getting on or off.

Teach kids that if something happens on the bus that makes them feel scared or unsafe, it's important to tell a trusted adult such as the bus driver, teacher, or school counselor. by @thebarriecenter

With school and fall activities starting back, it is important to think about why mandatory reporting matters. Teachers, counselors, and school staff- YOU are often the first to see signs of abuse. Children are also more likely to disclose to you at school. As mandatory reporters, your voice protects children. Do you know what to do?

📝 Recognize - Know the signs
🗣 Respond - Know what to say
📞 Report - Know who to call

Need a training or refresher? The Barrie Center offers FREE Mandatory Reporting training to any school, church, daycare, or other youth-serving organization through our Pinwheels for Prevention program! Send us a message or call Robyn at 256-543-1319 to schedule!
