For Nicolás and his family, reading is a way of staying close while living countries apart.

Originally from Colombia and now living in New York, Nicolás is in a book club with his brothers, mother, aunt, cousins, and grandmother. They meet online from Colombia, Spain, and different parts of the U.S., taking turns choosing a book each month.

When we met him at The Battery, he was reading his selection: "El invencible verano de Liliana" by Cristina Rivera Garza. The author tells the story of her sister Liliana, murdered by her partner in Mexico, and her search for justice. For Nicolás’s family, it opened up conversations about feminism, how they relate to one another, and their responsibilities as men in the family.

The highlight of the book club, he told us, has been “keeping the family together and just having different conversations you wouldn’t usually have.”

Introducing the inaugural Battery Fellows!
This week, we launched an initiative we're especially excited about: the Battery Fellows, bringing together five remarkable people working across art, science, ecology, and community.
The idea is simple: to make The Battery a platform for people whose work inspires new ways of thinking about beauty, biodiversity, and belonging, the three pillars at The Battery.
Some of our Fellows are already collaborating with us; others bring new perspectives and possibilities. Together, they'll help us explore what a public park can be -not only a place to enjoy nature, but also a place for experimentation, learning, and collaboration.
Meet our inaugural Fellows: Georgia Silvera Seamans, Aaron Sexton, Asmeret Berhe-Lumax, Alex Crowder, and Marielle Anzelone. Read more about them in this carousel and stay tuned for what's next with them.
We're excited to see what grows from these collaborations. Welcome to The Battery!

Georgia Silvera Seamans

Urban Community Forester, Environmental Professor & Founder, Local Nature Lab
Georgia is an urban community forester and environmental professor dedicated to connecting people with nature and the wildlife in their neighborhoods. Through Local Nature Lab, she explores the relationships between urban forests, birds, and communities, encouraging New Yorkers to discover the ecological richness of the city and become active participants in caring for it.

Aaron Sexton

Researcher, Cornell University's Lab of Urban Plant Ecology
Aaron studies the ecological relationships that shape plant life in urban environments, particularly the interactions between plants and insects. He is already conducting research on native bees at The Battery, including a monitoring station near the Labyrinth. His work brings scientific inquiry directly into the park, helping us better understand and support urban biodiversity.

Alex Crowder

Floral Artist & Founder, Field Studies Flora
Alex is a floral artist whose work explores the relationship between plants, beauty, and the natural world. Through Field Studies Flora, she embraces the wild, the dried, and the imperfect, while rethinking how flowers are sourced. She now wo taken in The Battery (Manhattan) by @thebatterynyc

Did you know that protests saved the Battery from becoming a railroad depot in the late nineteenth century? We have working-class New Yorkers to thank for the survival of this beautiful park.

“We are a floral species living on a floral planet.” That was one of the ideas @DavidGeorgeHaskell shared at The Battery this Tuesday, during his lecture on How Flowers Made Our World.

And what a beautiful day to gather in the garden for our 2026 Gardeners Luncheon! Gorgeous weather, so many friends around the tables, and the pleasure of sharing good food, conversation, and flowers.

We’re grateful to our wonderful supporters: @moethennessy , bringing Chandon Spritz to the garden; @fieldstudiesflora Flora, creating our floral arrangements; and @printempsnewyork, bringing a touch of Parisian elegance and sweetness to the occasion.

A heartfelt thank you to all the individuals and organizations who made this gathering possible—and to everyone who joined us. We had such a lovely time with you. 🌸

The free Staten Island Ferry passes Lady Liberty. These sellers charge tourists $40 for less. 😢

At the Battery in Lower Manhattan, Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal @manhattanbp stepped in to prevent tourists from paying for a boat that never lands on the island.

A clever trick of nature! 🐛🌿

Milkweed produces toxic compounds to protect itself from being eaten. But monarch caterpillars have evolved a remarkable defense: they can eat the leaves, tolerate the toxins, and store some of them in their bodies.

The result? The caterpillar—and later the butterfly—becomes toxic to many predators.

A plant's defense becomes a butterfly's protection.

Today, @alexwcrowder will have the privilege of sharing the stage with @davidgeorgehaskell at @thebatterynyc Gardeners Luncheon, following David’s lecture on How Flowers Made Our World. It’s the start of our new partnership with The Battery, a park that has been a fort, an immigration station and a concert hall. Today it’s 25 waterfront acres of perennial gardens, woodland and an urban farm at the tip of Manhattan. by @thebatterynyc

Even in a rainstorm, New Yorkers show up and show out for fungi ⛈️

We presented at @newyorkmyc Fungus Fest this weekend, and followed it with a community science dig — and despite it pouring buckets, we were thrilled to have a group of people willing to get wet, muddy and dirty with us in the pursuit of expanding knowledge about fungal biodiversity in NYC.

Huge thanks to @thebatterynyc for sponsoring this dig, to @existingwithjenn for capturing some of the rainy fall magic 📷, and to everyone who braved the rain with us to make science happen 🔬 taken in Battery Park by @thebatterynyc

The rain didn’t hurry anyone home—including NYC Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura, who spent the afternoon at Fungus Festival with her family, exploring the many ways to discover, taste and learn about fungi.

They peered at fungi and spores through microscopes, tried mushroom identification, tasted mushroom cookies, mushroom hot chocolate and pickled mushrooms, and picked up rare varieties to cook tonight.

Thank you, Commissioner, for joining us and celebrating a park full of New Yorkers—curious, hungry, happy to be together, and undeterred by the rain. A free festival at The Battery, open to everyone, with a whole kingdom to discover. 🍄 by @thebatterynyc
