A good section of my garden before the raised beds went in. They are sunshine in dark days and long winters. Every single part is so valuable. The latex in the stem will remove warts. Pop the heads off for a little pool of the stuff. Applied daily, it will remove them in 2 weeks. I made an infused oil with the flower heads that's made the most golden oil for dry skin and stiff joints. The leaves I harvest all the time for teas, salads, and green mixes for stir fry, etc. And the roots I really treasure because they do the best job at helping my liver to support digestion. I wouldn't be without beautiful dandelion 🌞 #dandelion #treasure #foraging #wildmedicine by @thebeginnerforager

I already miss the hawthorn flowers. The first of the white, aromatic blooms to burst into life. Elderflower is already here, and Linden is on its way. I read recently that when Hawthorn flowers, it's safe to plant your seedlings out. I've done that this year, and I'll keep to that way of doing things. There's so much to say about this plant, I think Hawthorn is the real emblem of Ireland. It is phenomenal heart medicine. It's not one to mess with, do not pick from a lone tree and do ask for permission. This is the fairy tree. Not for nothing, hawthorn commands respect. I tincture the leaves and flowers in the spring, strain, and add the berries when they're ready. It makes the loveliest medicine. #hawthorn #magical #fairy #foraging #wildmedicine by @thebeginnerforager

This year I want to expand the foraging/plant walks at Sonairte to include herbal medicine making. I'll be running these for each season, in Spring the focus is on allergies and helping the body detox after winter. We will be making two infusions (teas), a wild herbal salve a Spring tonic that you can take home 💚

If there was one plant that I couldn't do without every year, it's hawthorn, Crataegus monogyna/Sceach Gheal. Its leaves are edible and best in Spring, and its berries are excellent heart medicine - do not eat the seed - but do try making a ketchup with the berries. Or dry then and make teas throughout the winter. I love it so much. Don't pick from a single tree, I always pick where the hawthorns are growing in a row, and it grows so often like this in hedgerows. A single tree is a fairy tree and isn't to be messed with. There's so much significance to beautiful hawthorn, as Niall Mac Coitir writes, it has always been regarded with a mixture of fear and respect ❤️ #hawthorn #trees #treehugger #heart #heartmedicine #berries #wildmedicine #wildfood #mythology #tradition #foraging by @thebeginnerforager

Autumn can be a difficult time for many people, as the evening sun starts rolling back and the move toward winter becomes clear. But there's so much beauty in it, and the trees last hurrah is not to be missed. In seasons like this, it does us so much good to get out and walk whenever we can and as often as we can. To take in the fresher air and look at all the changes happening around us. There's still so much life. Collect some rosehips and hawthorn berries and simmer them to make a tea that's good for our physical and emotional heart. Hug a tree ❤️ #forestbathing #trees #nature #naturetherapy🌿 #seasonschange #seasonalfood #autumn #autumncolors #wildmedicine #wildfood by @thebeginnerforager

I really love sweet chestnuts. Castanea sativa is not a native tree. It comes from Spain, but it is well established in Ireland. Horse chestnut Aesculus hippocastanum comes from the Balkans, but it is naturalised. They have very different leaves, and sweet chestnut leaves are long, oblong, and toothed. Horse chestnut ia not edible, only sweet chestnut can be eaten. The casings on the nuts are very spiky. Open the casings with the sole of your shoe, if they haven't opened yet. They can be used to make soup, eaten roasted with salt, or made into a stuffing for Christmas. #autumn #autumncolors #sweetchestnut #chestnut #trees #urbanforaging #foraging #wildfood #nutrition by @thebeginnerforager

I love and admire the plants that grow through, in and around rock. I love little Mexican Fleabane, aka Erigeron karvinskianus, also known as Wall Daisy. It is in the Daisy family, and the Irish name is Nóinín balla, which I love. It's as cute as the flowers are. The flowers make a great tasting tea, and the plant has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties, so it's been used to treat issues like gastroenteritis and diarrhoea, among other issues. #wildtea #wildmedicine #summertime #flowers #daisy #wallflower #urbanforaging #naturelovers by @thebeginnerforager

You might see tall teasel aka Dipsacus fullonum in hedgerows and river banks. Nothing else looks like it. The spiny seed pods were used at one point to comb wool and were vital to the English wool trade. The roots are incredibly medicinal, it is used to treat skeletal injury and skin issues, and in TCM, it works on the liver and kidneys. Its Irish name is Leadán úcaire. #wildflowersofireland #wildmedicine #flowers #foraging #urbanforaging #teasel #naturelovers #summer #pollinators by @thebeginnerforager

I love autumn, but I'm already missing the summer flowers! I love, love, love field scabious aka knautia arvensis, a beautiful flower in the honeysuckle family. Its common name comes from the species' history of treating scabies and other skin issues. It likes a meadow, also likes the roadside. #foraging #wildflowersofinstagram #flowers #wildfood #wildmedicine #summertime #pollinators #beauty #naturelovers taken in Trim, County Meath by @thebeginnerforager
