Quantum theory may not be immediately intuitive, but it has the power to entirely subvert our deterministic view of the universe.

This is likely why recent advances in quantum research have sparked so much enthusiasm among custodians and researchers of wisdom traditions that came before Western scientific thought. Concepts like indeterminacy, entanglement, and non-linearity have long dwelled in cosmologies that predate — and will outlast — the thinking prevalent in our societies. Yet, we still tend to dismiss them as exotic or esoteric.

If we break the system from within, what falls apart exactly? Whilst investors, politicians, and qubit evangelists hope to be the first to reach a state of “advantage,” those who are less in a rush to freeze an orbiting electron do wonder what will happen when computers can flawlessly simulate nature, when the encryption that protects the internet can be broken, and when all the possibilities of a choice are considered at the same time, just a fraction of a second before a decision is made.

If we fully understand the complexity of what surrounds us, will we still be capable of imagining anything?

The systems that track intellectual property rights, from attribution to remuneration, were built for a simpler world of single authors and single works. Today, IP is an ecosystem that lives both inside and outside the digital world, where often tens if not hundreds of authors could benefit from a single work. A maze of provenance knots that cannot easily be untangled.

Philippe’s “engineering utopia” is the perfect reconciliation of access, attribution and remuneration. He argues that this is, first, a data problem rather than a legal one.

Beneath copyright law sits a quieter layer, where identity, attribution, and permission are either made legible to machines or compromised. A new infrastructure is needed, connecting the systems that underpin this framework, so that artists can generate sustainable and fair value from their work.

Our conversation with Philippe Rixhon, titled “What Foundations Are We Building for Future Authors?”, took place on August 9th as part of Blueprints, CinemaO’s creative deeptech forum. The event was co-produced with Locarno Factory at the 2026 Locarno Film Festival. by @theblack_cube

Since language-based models entered the digital world, the competition for our attention has subtly but decisively shifted. It has turned into an effort to build attachment with our devices and the chatbots we interact with daily.

AI ethicist and data activist Renée Cummings explored this shift with us. She discussed the impact artificial companions have on our agency and creativity. At the core of this issue is data and the algorithms that use it to shape our decisions and, ultimately, our imagination.

Renée’s ongoing research on “data trauma” raises an important question: as AI companionship and assistance become more common, how can we regain agency and control over our data?
