“God Bless the Black girl” encompasses my year. It’s both a celebration and a lamentation. In haiku form.
Thanks to these incredible musicians…

Each time I put music out, it gets easier — even if it takes a year or two. Although I work full-time, I’ve made an intentional choice to focus on my music, my TRUE love. Thanks for supporting “True,” which is out now! I hope u like it 🩷 special thanks to @deanhughart.sound on production and mixing! He isn’t just a musician, but a friend who listened to the story behind my writing. That’s my guy right there 🙌🏾 also, this picture was taken by @sigsation, love ya! 😊 by @theblessedsound

I want to thank everyone for your support of my new song and my big step into being an artist in general. I probably have somewhere around 50 songs that I’ve written within the past 10 years, but I haven’t shared any of them until now. After having the worst experience of my life on a previous college campus, I never thought I’d sing again. Thanks @nonsequigram, @isaacmerkin & @stefandanielhopwood for bringing everything to life, @dean.thebean for the push and believing in me, and the entire music community at Columbia, especially @evawestphal & @chrissytinali for answering all my stupid questions 🤦🏾‍♀️ ❤️ In addition to all that, here’s another recent life dump! “Eagle’s calling and it’s calling your name, tides are turning, bringing winds of change. Why do I feel this way? The promise of a new day.” — @paulaabdul ❤️ a month and a half late, but I don’t have a job yet, so I have time 😁 taken in New York, New York by @theblessedsound

“Always Be My Baby” by @mariahcarey ❤️ I chose my senior solo with the sentiment that Nonseq (my first group of friends at @columbiags) and everyone else I’ve met during my time here will always be in my heart. I’ll always carry your spirits and memories, and will always be there when you call (or a day or two or a week after) 😁 Much luv! 💕 taken in New York, New York by @theblessedsound

I will never forget this day 10 years ago. I had just started high school and turned 15. Hurricane Sandy was approaching. My dad came into my room early in the morning. His eyes were watery. I had never seen him cry before. He told me that my little sister had gone into cardiac arrest that morning at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. They tried to save her, but… she was 13 when she died. That was the experienced on which my entire time in high school was based. I never truly got over it. Since it’s the 10th anniversary, I’d like to share. My mother passed away in 2000. My sister and I were 1 and 2, respectively. My mom had Sickle Cell Anemia, and while I was fortunate to only get the trait, my sister had SSA as well. She was my best friend. We did everything together. On Saturday mornings, my dad would give us huge pieces of paper and we would spend the day drawing and playing. When we would go places with my dad, she would walk up to random people and just hug them. That’s the kind of person she was. In 2004, a few months before she turned 4 (we shared the same bed, by choice, at the time), she had a stroke. It was a horrible experience. The doctors were able to save her life, but she would be unable to walk or talk for the next 9 years. She lived in a facility for disabled children, where we would visit her often. I loved spending time with her. She would still smile every time she saw us. Towards the end of her life, she started having more heart problems. There were a few close calls. My dad made many late night trips to CHOP. But still, I had her, and unlike my mom, I KNEW her very well, so when she died, I didn’t want to live anymore, either. From that point on, and even up till this day, survivor’s guilt haunts me. She was such a good person and she deserved life. It pains me so much. We would’ve been in our 20s together and… it just sucks. I can’t believe it’s been ten years. I can’t say it’s easier, but she’s still alive in my heart. Also: the letter (last picture) is from my high school principal at the time, who passed away last year. I found it a few months back and it struck a nerve. Two beautiful souls. God rest their souls. ❤️ taken in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by @theblessedsound

I’m so late in posting this, but it’s one of the few things I’ve done that I’m actually proud of. So, here’s “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac, and I owe all the beauty of this to the beautiful @jackiemarchal 💜
