animal farm is a fantastic political allegory that depicts the corruption of revolutionary ideals and dangers of absolute power. it shows how power is consolidated using fear, misinformation and violence, and rules are manipulated to serve the authoritarian regime. in the end, we realise the cyclical nature of governments, how revolutions replace one tyranny with another.

⭑ january wrap-up ⭑

this month i saw a lot of art, had some very cool experiences and found myself feeling deeply grateful for the life i get to live.

books i read in january:

𖤐 the safekeep - beautifully written historical fiction about memory, trauma and repression. such an impressive debut novel that portrays the long-lasting repercussions of war.

𖤐 small things like these - a powerful novella about the magdelene laundries in ireland, that makes you realize how a little kindness and courage can have a big impact against entrenched societal evils. i will be reading everything claire keegan has ever written.

𖤐 animal farm - a political allegory that depicts the russian revolution and the rise of totalitarian rule told with the help of animals on a farm. it is a criticism of corruption, propaganda and the abuse of power and still remains scarily relevant to politics and society at present.

i loved everything i read this month. a great start to the year. what were your favourites in january?

animal farm is a political allegory that depicts the corruption of revolutionary ideals and the dangers of absolute power. it starts with the animals planning a rebellion against human oppression. they dream of a utopia where all animals are equal but it ends with them stuck in a totalitarian dictatorship where they are exploited by those who used to be their own comrades.

it portrays how power is concentrated in the hands of a few using fear, misinformation and violence, and how the rules are reshaped at will to serve the interests of the authoritarian regime. there are multiple instances throughout the book where those in power distort the truth and rewrite history to manipulate the animals in the farm.

it highlights how revolutionary ideals can be subverted by greed and propaganda. the book acts as a warning by showing us how naive, unquestioning loyalty allows leaders to become tyrants and how the cyclical nature of oppressive regimes ultimately replaces one tyranny with another.

the safekeep is set in netherlands a few years after the second world war when everyone has rebuilt their lives and gone back to normalcy. isabel, the main character, lives alone in a house that was acquired by her uncle during the war. she cares for and looks after the house as a precious thing. when eva, a guest comes to live with her for a while, isabel notices her family heirlooms are disappearing one by one.

this book is so beautifully written, with every sentence, word and description seeming intentional and meaningful. it is such an impressive debut novel. it does a great job at exploring sibling dynamics and building tension between the characters. the yearning, isolation, grief and trauma of the protagonists feel incredibly real.

it's best to go into this book blind and allow the plot to reveal itself to you as you gradually understand the meaning behind the title. it talks about a lesser known story of the war from a perspective i have never come across before. it raises questions about ownership and memory and is a reminder that the repercussions of war linger long after the conflict ends.

my favourite reads from 2025 📚

⋆ if beale street could talk - absolutely heartbreaking. talks about how racism destroys lives but also about how people keep hoping and fighting despite oppression and injustice.

⋆ evenings and weekends - this book reminded me of why i love reading literary fiction and character driven stories. has so many well written complex and relatable characters that you will find yourself rooting for.

⋆ frankenstein - one of the pieces of literature i have ever read. genre defining and so beautifully written. it poses such important questions about science and creation and its ethics, about ambition and what it means to be human.

i hope you had a great reading year. whether you read one book or a hundred, i hope it gave you something meaningful to take from it.
