🇬🇧🇮🇹Stories of books and more.
Spin-off account of The Cabinet of Curiosities column by @ledorso for Il Novelliere

POSTS STORIES REELS

🇬🇧Very often the publication of a book hides some very fascinating details; anecdotes and curiosities that make books interesting far beyond their plot or their style. I started "The Cabinet of Curiosities" column on the @il_novelliere_rivista specifically to tell some of these stories. This account was created as a sort of spin-off of that column, a space where I can tell the stories behind some of the most interesting pieces of my personal collection, including some interesting book hunts, bookshops, and rare or curious books with which I've come into contact. No reviews or opinions on the content of the books, plenty of those around already. Just stories, hopefully interesting and hopefully enjoyable.
.

🇬🇧 Fair enough, this is definitely not a piece from my collection, but I did state at the very beginning that eventually I will talk about pieces with which I only come into contact. Well, this is definitely an item worth a post: a draft of the very first novel ever submitted to a publisher by the queen of murder mysteries, Agatha Christie. Funnily enough, her first attempt at a novel was not a detective story at all, but a romance by the title Snow Upon the Desert. Unfortunately the literary agency Hughes and Massie turned the manuscript down, leaving the work unpublished. Here is the original transcript, never displayed before, belonging to the Christie Archive Trust and on display at the British Library (@britishlibrary)until the 20th of June 2027.
.

🇬🇧 Was the 1901 Icelandic translation of Dracula really the very first non-English version of Bram Stoker's masterpiece? How did the first image of the Prince of vampires look? And why were the first Russian editions not attributed to the Irish author? In this impressive non-fiction work the famous book hunter Simone Berni (@cacciatore_di_libri) recounts the complex history of the early editions of one of the most important works in gothic literature, including some of his own fundamental discoveries. This is the 2016 first English edition of the 2014 Italian one. An unmissable read for all fans of Dracula.
NOTE: yes, I am aware of the misspelled title; but if you think that the 1922 first Italian edition misspelled the name of the author on the cover (Brahm instead of Bram) it all kind of fits.
P.S. My interview with Simone Berni for The Cabinet of Curiosities will be published on the next issue of Il Novelliere (@il_novelliere_rivista), so keep an eye out for that.
.
P.S. La mia intervista a Simone Berni per The Cabinet of Curiosities sarà pubblicata nel prossimo numero de "Il Novelliere" (@il_novelliere_rivista), non perdetevelo. by @thecabinetkeeper

🇬🇧 I can't believe how long I have been unaware of the existence of this treat: a 1969 first edition of Bored of the Rings, the parody of The Lord of the Rings. The cult ironic retelling of Tolkien's legendary fantasy was written by Henry Beard and Douglas Kenney and published by Signet (now part of Penguin) for the humour publication The Harvard Lampoon. It follows the adventures of Frito Bugger, Spam Gangree, Moxie, and Pepsi, retracing the original hobbits' journey in a satirical reinterpretation that obtained significant success. Unusually for a parody of this kind, in fact, the book remained in print for over four decades and was translated in several languages, surviving the possible hostility of all hardcore Tolkien fans (although it does come with a clear warning by the authors on the back cover, last slide).

🇬🇧 Today a little break from the spooky October theme. Here's a special treat for all Hemingway fans: Collected Poems Originally Published In Paris, a 1960 pirated edition of Hemingway's poems. It is a small collection of the great author's poetic works, 16 in total, 10 of which are rarer items from his early years in the French capital. It was printed as a pirated edition of a 1955 version in San Francisco by City Lights, led by the Beat generation poet Lawrence Farlinghetti. This copy came from the Hemingway Museum in Key West, Florida, once the beautiful home of the writer.

Antique and rare books, first editions, prints, maps, antiques... the choice here is limitless with a vast assortment of very affordable vintage paperbacks as a cherry on top. Rare Books And Curios is without any doubt my point of reference when looking for some interesting and rare literary treasure to add to my collection.
A few words from Tom the bookseller (@rarebooksandcurios): "Rare, antique and vintage books, from first editions to fabulous paperbacks, with a selection of maps and prints, treasures and curiosities. All to be found in the heart of historic Greenwich, London".

🇬🇧 There are several reasons why this particular volume is relevant to me. The content, to begin with. In Search of Dracula is one of the first attempts to connect Bram Stoker's character with actual historical events and folklore from Eastern Europe. Despite the fact that McNally's and Florescu's book has become one of the most famous research works on the figure of Dracula, it also happens to be the most controversial with its theories far-fetched when not completely wrong. This particular copy is an Advance Uncorrected Proof; these are copies that publishers send out to booksellers, reviewers, and critics before the actual publication as a way of testing public reactions. It has a plate suggesting a possible price and a possible publication date, and the index does not show the page numbers as these might still change before publication. The final element making this copy particularly interesting is the cover illustration. It is by Edward Gorey, of whom you'll hear a lot on this page as he is a recurrent name in my collection and one of my favourite illustrators. His drawings are iconic, eerie, and disquieting, and his production is enormous including, besides his own books, illustrations of famous works and magazines, cover art, and theatre productions.
.
BOOKSHOP THURSDAY
.
🇬🇧 As promised in the beginning, this page will occasionally also talk about bookshops. To do so I decided to start a small "column" titled Bookshop Thursday, where on select Thursday I'll jot down a few words about some of my favourite places. I could not but start by mentioning one of my absolute favourite independent bookshops, Naima35mq (@naima_35mq ). It's the smallest bookshop in Campania, led by Domenico and Flavia, but despite its size it contains innumerable treasures. I stumbled upon it while hunting for a book that took me from Milan to Benevento and finally to Naima, only a few km from my hometown. It has since moved a few times before finally finding its current home in Atripalda.
A few words from Domenico (@illibraio35mq): "Leggi indipendente, sogna rivoluzionario" (Independent reading, revolutionary dreaming).

🇬🇧 Here's something that'll definitely make you lose a few hours of sleep. Scary Stories to Tell in The Dark, by Alvin Schwartz, is a collection of horror stories inspired by folklore and urban legends. It was originally published in 1981 by Harper & Row (later HarperCollins). A sequel, More Stories to Tell in The Dark, came out in 1984, and finally a third book, Scary Stories 3 More Tales to Chill Your Bones, in 1991. The interesting publishing history of this series revolves around the beautiful but honestly terrifying original illustrations by Stephen Gammell. Released as a series for children, it soon caused the opposition of many who deemed it not appropriate for a younger audience. So strong was the opposition that in 2011, for the 30th anniversary, the publisher reissued the books with new, toned down, and more cartoonish illustrations by Brett Helquist. But that's not the end of the story. The fan base of the original editions had grown so large and was so enraged by the changes that it managed to put pressure on Harper & Row and forced them to bring back the series, in 2017, with the original Gammell illustrations. The series was also adapted for the big screen in 2019.

Un sequel, "More Stories to Tell in the Dark", uscì nel 1984 e, infine, un terzo libro, "Scary Stories 3: More Tales to Chill Your Bones", arrivò nel 1991.

🇬🇧 Despite what many still believe, The Nightmare Before Christmas was not directed by Tim Burton. The actual director was Henry Selick, with a script from Michael McDowell and later Caroline Thompson. Burton appeared in the film only as a producer, although he had an enormous influence on the design of the characters and settings. But what he really created was the 1993 poem (from which the script was adapted) and the drawings behind the story. Yes, a poem. There era many editions out there, with the first 1993 American and the 2016 updated edition (with a few new drawings, second slide) being the most sought after. Some editions even came out with a CD companion featuring the poem read by none other than Sir Christopher Lee (last slide), a must-have item for any burtonian collector.
.
