It’s been one week since my Ultra ā›°ļøāœØ

My first time running 50k ever with @grindstonetrailrunningfestival was …a Narnia of sensationsšŸ’„
I started running one year ago at 40 years old. I was a dancer in my younger years, cardio obsessed but never a runner with any ease or without extreme disdain. I gained 85 lbs postpartum due to injury, depression, and the like… found weight training šŸ‹ļøā€ā™€ļø and it changed my life.
Getting strong, putting on muscle unlocked doors to a body I love, I trust, and that is capable of things I could have never imagined. I did not bounce back, I rebuilt this stack of bones, the skin I’m in, the thoughts I think…. And I bet every ultra runner on that šŸ”ļø has something to say about transformation of the body, the mind, and/or the spirit in some big way or another✨

I have never done a road marathon or full marathon. In the last year I have one road half, and two fairly technical/and highly technical half trail runs. 6 months ago I signed up for this trail 50k bc the feeling of being on a trail and efforting this way breaks something wide open that I am desperate for more of. It has taught me how to train, how to spend energy, how to recover. Those skills bleed into my day to day living, mothering, working, resting, in every single way✨

I feel lucky for the experience of 33 miles on a mountain with others that invite in the hard on their own watch, so they can handle the hard things that show up uninvited; such is life’s blessing and curse. I encountered people and their encouragements when I needed, without asking for it, the offer up of their words, or simply putting their body with yours to carry you out of DNF territory. Truly awesome to experience that planet.
I am so so lucky ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„ to have beautifully suffered next to some of these athletes met on the mountain, and also in the gym, on morning runs, competitions, and in rest, thank you fellow animalsšŸ¤šŸ’Ŗ
Thank you to all who helped me train, recover and who have the memo to remind me that I never want to do 50k 5k elevation again…. Until I get amnesia and sign up for another šŸ„“šŸ¤ā›°ļø For now, happy to salute the ultra runners out there, hop in my šŸš€ and bid adieu to your šŸŒŽ. *resting* by @thechefryanross

✨Muscle medicine has set me free šŸ•Šļø
Skinny culture is an ugly grind of the soul and the body. Fitness culture capitalizes on non existent short cuts, wellness culture parades longevity through primarily aesthetics and what you look like, MUSCLE is impossible to fabricate, spiritually bypass, shortcut or bankroll. It is the path less taken, bc it is the harder one, but it is the lasting one šŸ™ŒāœØšŸ’Ŗā¤ļøā€šŸ”„ LET’S GO by @thechefryanross

Today I completed an ultramarathon.
Never in my life have I done something so hard, so agonizing or so beautiful ( that did not involve loved ones). It is incredible how our wells run much deeper than we know , or could ever imagine. I reached a new bottom of mine today. And I like who I am down there šŸ™ŒāœØšŸ¤šŸ”„

What sticks with me:
Calories are what you weigh
Macronutrients are what you look like
Micronutrient are how you feel
Electrolytes are how you perform✨
I love a bit of šŸ‹ and good salt in some water to replenish lost minerals through all this 🤘 sweat 🤘and in the high ā˜€ļø season. I make sure to eat lots of water packed foods like leafy vegetables, melons etc. but a fun electrolyte sleeve for on the go, to change it up and for a mocktail is so fun for me. @drinkmagna is one I reach for over and over. Love the addition of creatine šŸ’Ŗ

✨Lifting✨ is not about knowing what to do but learning how to do it….endlessly. The greatest skill one can have as a beginner is curiosity. Taking the time every few sessions or so, to tinker, adjust, try something, spot someone, push a boundary yields so much growth and confidence in the gym šŸ¤šŸ™ŒšŸ™ŒšŸ‘ŠšŸ’Ŗ

✨Anything BUT consistency ✨

We hear that consistency is the most important part of results. This is true! āļø BUT it’s not where we start.
We have so much to do, to think of, so many non negotiables that are baked in… not our workouts, our fueling, our recovery….
We need these things to become WORTH our consistency first✨
First we make the decision that’s gives us direction then we form alignment and only then does consistency find us. Practice that, then come the results.
So first let’s make the CHOICEšŸ’« ;
Choosing to start in imperfect conditions may be the gateway for the longtime wellness results you’re looking for. Start in the mess, not ā€œon a Monday,ā€ with perfect conditions, when you’re ready. Just startšŸ™Œ by @thechefryanross

You work for the muscle, but the muscle takes you beyond the bathing suit. It changes your body, your mind, and eventually the way you get to live.

*A getaway where I’m not thinking about what I am or am not eating, where I move my body because I can.āļø by @thechefryanross

I used to think fitness was the same as wellness. That being in shape was about fitting into a smaller space. About control. But, gaining strength and gaining muscle, has taught me something completely differentā¬‡ļø.

šŸ’Ŗ Muscle = Food freedom
Strength training helped me stop fearing food and start fueling my movement. I eat to perform. Not to punish, not to celebrate, and not for comfort. It has rewired my brain; to realize that I AM the celebration, I AM the comfort. How wild is that?! I have so much more time now to live my actual life and be present bc I’m not ruled by rules or diets or emotion led eating.
AND, when I do eat an ice cream cone, I’m still ripped in the morning. More muscle kicks up your metabolism. Muscle is the magic pill.

šŸ’Ŗ Feeling strong
It’s not about how my body looks, it’s about what it can do. A friend I train with mentioned this to me and it has really stuck… She said, I was prepared for the glory of wearing a two-piece bathing suit again sure… But I had no idea what it would feel like to actually BE strong. Even if you pick up a weight initially because you wanna look good… Joke is on us because you might actually feel good too. Extrinsic motivations turn into intrinsic ones. It doesn’t matter what reason you start with, just start. Nothing could’ve prepared me for how being strong FEELS.

šŸ’Ŗ Self-perception
And OK, it’s definitely how you look too. I’m on board with some vanity, sure! So here we go! - I value body responsibility over body positivity. There’s a special place in hell for bullies and for shame yes. BUT to take care of your body is important. AND, if it serves you well, it can be your business card ;how people perceive you what they think of when they look at you. What YOU think when you look at you. If aesthetics is motivation start, great; you’re getting the benefits of muscle magic no matter how you get going.
Gaining muscle changed how I see myself. Taking up space, good in the skin I’m in. This is the version of me I never knew I always wanted.

Muscle isn’t just something I’ve built — it’s something that’s rebuilt me, my mind, my whole life and those around me I love feel it too. šŸ’«

Can I be dramatic for a secondāœØšŸ’«āœØ.
I was a dancer; seemingly fit, seemingly healthy, but always had food noise, erratic eating, disrupted cycles, painful thoughts… And still✨ felt like I had it pretty good. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø We are rarely isolated in a singular feeling. We are mosaics of pain, healing, successes, love and so on.
I gained 85 pounds postpartum and was depressed and injured… I desperately wanted to ā€œbounce backā€ but I didn’t… in the traditional sense. It took me 18 months to lock in to lose 85 pounds, to gain muscle, to eradicate my symptoms of PCOS and depression. My bounce back was actually the rebuild to a better version of myself than I ever could’ve wished upon a āļø for. Go ahead and aim for the bounce back, but don’t be surprised if you don’t really need who is back there anymore. Go for the recovery, the rebuild, the good fuel, the weight lift, the walk with friends… get on with it already, this IS dramatic because we get this one body, this one shot in this boom. Let’s go! šŸ‘ŠšŸ‘šŸ’«
