Welcome to: Manipulation 101, Workplace Edition.
And to be fair. You can apply this anywhere. We see it online every day.

One of the easiest ways to avoid accountability is to make the person naming the problem, the problem. And workplaces do this all the time. An employee says they’re worried about their workload. “They’re not a team player.” Someone speaks up challenging leadership’s decision, and now we’re talking about their delivery.

Problems are managed by moving them.
It’s easy to talk about these behaviors as manipulation tactics-and to be clear, they are. But they can also function as organizational regulation strategies. Because when accountability threatens the hierarchy itself, the system has an incentive to punish the person who created instability by naming what everyone else then learns to tolerate.

Here are 10 ways it happens...

Save this. You’ll want to come back to it later. by @thecomplexrebel

A lot of people are calling what’s happening in white-collar culture “cognitive dissonance.”

I don’t think that fully captures it.

Dissonance means you can still consciously feel the contradiction.

But many workplaces train people to disconnect long before the conscious mind catches up. The body learns what honesty costs. It learns what happens to people who speak too honestly, feel too deeply, or refuse to keep smoothing things over. So the nervous system adapts.

And then the adaptation gets rewarded.

Professionalism.
Leadership.
Reliability.
Resilience.
“Being a team player.”

Until the body stops cooperating.

New essay:
“It’s Not Dissonance If You Can’t Feel It.”

The research is not subtle: organizations that punish people raising problems, have blind spots. Ask NASA how that worked out in 1986.

Naming a problem IS a contribution. It’s the first one. You are not required to arrive with the solution to deserve being heard.

Say the thing. 🎤

If you don’t know who Kalie Robins is, go educate yourselves. She’s on this platform.

Apparently, if you ask Meta’s AI about Kalie, Muse will tell you everything you want to know. Including the names, ages, and locations of Kalie’s minor children.
So Kalie is a furious mother who’s understandably very upset after Meta’s AI violated her family’s privacy.

Words feel inadequate for the heartbreak in Bend right now. My heart goes out to the families, students, and educators holding unimaginable grief today.

Re-experiencing this nightmare after Sandy Hook, Uvalde, and so many others creates a deep moral exhaustion. We are repeatedly asked to carry the weight of a system that fails to protect our children.

It is profoundly irresponsible to witness Americans dedicate endless energy to standing outside Planned Parenthood, yet remain completely silent when living children experience horrors in their classrooms or endure harm in ICE detention centers.

At the same time, we see law enforcement and government leaders continue to protect their own interests and narratives rather than genuinely serving vulnerable communities, especially CHILDREN.

We are living through profound, repeated betrayals by the very institutions meant to keep us safe. Our children deserve genuine protection, care, and dignity. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH- by @thecomplexrebel

A five-year-old should be learning how to read. Not how to survive a gunman.

Yesterday, three children, ages 5, 8, and 11, and a teacher were killed at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon. And I want us to talk about the children who survive. The children who witness these events. The children who practice hiding in classrooms. The children growing up knowing that going to school could mean losing their lives.

Because the consequences can be PHYSIOLOGICAL.

Decades of research have established that prolonged childhood adversity can affect brain development, stress-response systems, immune function, and even gene expression. We know this. Our institutions know this. And yet, we continue to debate school safety as though the only children harmed are the ones who die.

At what point does knowingly accepting the risk of lifelong harm become a policy choice?

Children are supposed to be protected by the systems we build. Instead, we’re asking them to adapt to the dangers those systems have failed to prevent.

THEY KNOW THE RISKS.

OUR CHILDREN CARRY THE COST.

THEY CALLED IT UNCLEAN. SCIENCE IS STUDYING ITS ABILITY TO HEAL. 🩸

For thousands of years, menstruation has been surrounded by myths, religious restrictions, and shame. And the history is WILD.

📖 THE BIBLE: Leviticus 15:19 declares menstruating women ritually “unclean” for seven days. Genesis 3:16 describes painful childbirth and male domination as consequences of Eve’s disobedience. While ritual impurity wasn’t necessarily considered sinful, these teachings helped shape centuries of attitudes toward women’s bodies.

🏛️ ANCIENT ROME: Pliny the Elder claimed menstrual blood could sour wine, destroy crops, dull mirrors, and even kill bees. Yes. BEES.

🌙 INDIGENOUS TRADITIONS: Not every culture treated menstruation as shameful. Some Indigenous communities, including the Yurok of Northern California, traditionally recognized menstruation as a time of heightened spiritual power.

🔬 NOW THE SCIENCE: Menstrual fluid contains endometrial stem/stromal cells with remarkable regenerative potential.

Researchers are studying these cells for tissue repair, inflammation regulation, and regenerative medicine.

A 2024 study found that menstrual blood-derived stem cells accelerated wound healing in diabetic rats. A 2025 scientific review explored their potential in treating damaged tissue and other medical conditions.

These are emerging therapies, not proof that menstrual blood itself heals wounds in humans. But the research is REAL.

For generations, girls were taught to hide their periods, apologize for them, and laugh along when boys made them the punchline.

Meanwhile, our bodies were producing cells that scientists are now investigating for their ability to REPAIR HUMAN TISSUE.

THE BLOOD OF LIFE IS FROM A WOMAN.

Maybe the thing that was dirty all along was what we were taught to believe about ourselves.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month but unfortunately it’s a grave public health crisis all year round. Reach out if we can help you find any resources or support. You matter.

ID: You don’t have to be married to be a victim of domestic violence. End description.

@mtmvcommunity is one of the first social media-based communities for survivors and their supporters. We offer peer support, groups, workshops, consulting, events, and resources for individuals affected by trauma, abuse, and sexual violence (and those who support them) across the globe. MTMV also connects individuals with resources aimed at enhancing mental health and overall well-being. In a world that disparages and ostracizes survivors, community is justice.

I often receive messages from people asking how they can follow in my footsteps. How they can become an advocate. How they can turn what happened to them into something meaningful. How they can live up to the people calling for change.

And I want to say something very clearly: You don’t owe anyone s**t because you survived something.

You don’t owe us your story. You don’t owe us your pain in a form we can understand. You don’t need a book deal to be valid. You don’t have to dedicate your life to advocacy. You don’t have to make your trauma useful. You don’t need to find meaning in it.

I never want to model to anyone that you have to turn your trauma into triumph.

We celebrate the people who take something terrible that happened to them and build something from it. And I am one of those people. But I never want my life to become a prescription for someone else’s survival. Because there is no hierarchy of surviving!!

The person who campaigns for law reform is not more courageous than the person who never tells another soul. The person who speaks publicly is not more healed than the person who wants privacy. The person who builds an organisation is not more worthy than the person who simply wants to get on with their life.

I advocate because I had to. I talk about what happened to me because, at this point in my life, I want to. But that does not mean I believe anyone else should have to.

If you have survived something terrible, I hope you know this: your survival does not need to produce anything to be worthy. You are allowed to simply be here. by @thecomplexrebel
