I’ve always said Burning Man happens twice.

There’s the Burn itself.

And then there’s the afterthought.

The part that comes when the dust settles, you get home, and you finally have enough distance to understand what the experience was trying to show you.

This year started with me ripping the awning off my trailer, running out of gas on the way there, losing my phone almost immediately, and spraining my ankle on day two.

So much for the plan.

But somewhere between losing the phone, being forced onto crutches, becoming Tortuga, sitting behind a typewriter in a raven mask at the Temple, and listening to complete strangers tell me what they were carrying, something shifted.

I slowed the fuck down.

And maybe that was the point.

I barely ran into anyone I already knew this year, which almost never happens to me out there.

Instead, I became still enough for people I didn’t know to find me.

One of them sat beside me at the Temple carrying the grief of losing her grandmother while at the same time carrying her unborn daughter.

Her name to be Ember.

A grandmother gone.
A daughter coming.

That moment alone reminded me why I keep returning.

Burning Man is difficult to explain to someone who has never been there. You can photograph the art, the dust, the costumes, the parties and the fire.

But the Burn has always been what happens between those things.

Between people.

I came home without some grand answer.

Just perspective.

And maybe that’s enough.

There’s more to the story & and honesty more to digest.
