The one and only Fighter Doctor Educator @thedapperhijabi Mar Aziz
teaches me a lot about the importance of the kick, the jab, the push, the defense, the dance of making it through our internal and external occupations.

Happy Monday! All! We are so excited to present: Our Community Iftar!

Come break your fast or affirm othersโ€™ fasts with Queer the Land and Noor! Fasting, being a โ€œpracticingโ€ Muslim, or being Muslim at all is not required to attend! As folks near the end of Ramadan, we want to create space for folks of all genders, sexualities, faiths and non faiths, and ages to gather in the spiritual grounding of the Muslim Holy Month of Ramadan. Join us on April 7th for Cham/Pan Asian Halal food and Traditional African American Bean Pie as we think about how Ramadan can be a space for all. Dr. Mar Aziz will lead a gender neutral prayer and create space for community discussions on what fasting means, its relationship to social justice, and queering Ramadan. This will be a masked event when not eating. We hope to see you there! Information on Location and Agenda will be sent post-registration!

Please register at the link in the bio: https://bit.ly/ouriftar. There is space to note dietary and accessibility needs!

If you would like more information on Ramadan and inclusivity, you will receive some in your confirmation email.

Exciting News! Join @noor_seattle @alphabetallianceofcolor @queertheland and @queerfightnightseattle for โ€œWe Keep Us Safeโ€: A Self-Defense Workshop Against Identity-Based Violence from community safety trainer and scholar-activist, Dr. Mar Aziz. As we are witnessing continued transphobic, white supremacist, and Islomophobic violence, it is imperative that we create spaces to learn and build safety with one another. This series centers queer and trans Black and Indigenous folks and people of color.

This two part workshop series centering QTBIPOC aims to equip community with basic skills and knowledge around de-escalation and self-defense. Weโ€™ll be meeting on Sunday, December 3 and Sunday, December 10 from 1pm - 3:30pm near the Central District & First Hill (location provided upon RSVP). Part 1 will focus on basic de-escalation and Part 2 will focus on basic defense skills and tips.

RSVP at bit.ly/seattle-safety (Link in bios also!)

Officially Assistant Professor Aziz today: the only Kufi wearing, enby, track track faculty member you know.
*
I was really overwhelmed walking into my building today. 10 years of being a scholar, we are so trained to get this moment, the tenure track professorship. Some of us wonโ€™t make it. I lost a dear, dear friend (David Hutchinson) last year who will always be a Professor in my heart but not on this earth. Some of us have thankfully chosen other paths. Some of us were forced to because of what the University can and cannot offer.
*
I am not sure Iโ€™ll stay here forever. I really went to grad school to tell a story. And now, Iโ€™m in this immensely ugly office (haha) that somehow has a a stunning lakeview, to finish telling that story. But Iโ€™ve already accomplished all I could ask of this career: worked on an exhibit at the Schomburg, blurbed the back of a Black Pantherโ€™s autobiography, consulted on a Blaxploitation/Kung Fu film book. And recently, I won an award for the research, the writing, and the work, the stories of the folks whose stories deserve to be told. Again just overwhelmed.
*
I put my first book on my shelf, the first book I bought as an African American Studies major in college: The Norton Anthology of African American Literature. For someone who struggled to get a good enough GPA to get into grad school, this is a lot. For a kid who was homeschooled, this is a lot. And I put up my first flier/post: A Black Lives Matter sign with a picture of Aura Rosserโ€™s face, from the organizing I gave my life to in graduate school. It all feels like the right way to have spent this day. In some ways it was weird to do this all physically alone, and in other ways I felt so grounded and protected by the energy and support I receive.
*
And a whole quarter of scary firsts and geeking out still to come. But the faculty profile is OFFICIALLY loading yโ€™all. All I need to do is choose the Professor Photo. Shoutout to my sibling @belquis.aminah for what might be some of the most gender affirming, handsome, and joyous photos of me ever. A lot of my people have been THROUGH it this year. So may we all get joy to keep in the months ahead. #queer #TGNC taken in My Office by @thedapperhijabi
