Someone replied to this painting today and said,“It feels like it’s a flower and shards of glass at the same time: beauty and pain, co-existing.”I read that and smiled because… yes.This painting has been becoming for more than a decade.The very first layer was painted during a worship service around 2013. Back then it was simply an explosion of color. It held a version of me that was reaching for something I didn’t yet have words for.Over the years, I kept returning to it.I painted over it.I tore into it.I let it change as I changed.Eventually the black lines entered my work. They became a language of their own. They weren’t there to cover the color. They gave the color somewhere to belong. They made room for complexity. They made room for beauty and pain to exist together without asking either one to leave.Then an eye emerged.Then a woman.Now, when I stand in front of it, I see a portal. A flower. A universe. A witness. Birth. The strange experience of becoming someone new while also being deeply seen by something much older than yourself.I don’t think paintings are finished.I think they live alongside us.Sometimes they spend years waiting for us to catch up to what they already know.After living with me for 13 years, I’m finally ready to release her into the world. I’ve been thinking a lot about birth lately.Not just literal birth.The birth of a painting. A relationship. A business. A version of yourself. A life that finally feels like it belongs to you.Every time I’ve been on the edge of bringing something into the world, there’s been this moment where every part of me wants to back away.“This is too much.”“I don’t think I can do this.”“What if I just… don’t?”Birth workers have a name for that moment.The ring of fire.It’s the threshold. The place where it feels the most impossible, right before something new arrives.I wonder how many of us mistake that feeling for failure.I know I have.That’s why I’m teaching Birth is Messy.Not because I have all the answers, but because I’ve been living this. I keep meeting deer.Today it was a mama and her baby.The thing that always gets me is that they decide whether to come closer. I can’t make that happen. All I can do is slow down enough to notice them and let them decide what feels safe.I’ve been wondering if imagination is like that.I know what it’s like to feel disconnected from it. To sit down and wish it would just do the thing. To feel frustrated when nothing comes.But lately I’ve been asking a different question.What helps my imagination feel welcome?Not productive.Not impressive.Welcome.That question has changed the way I walk through the woods, the way I make art, the way I rest, the way I listen.I’m curious…If your imagination really was a living creature, what would help it come a little closer to you today? by @thedarlingrage
