There are things I do every day that an earlier version of me worked really hard to learn. As they became more familiar, I started treating a lot of them as no big deal. I’ve been thinking about that as I celebrate being named to Incisal Edge’s 2026 40 Under 40. It feels good to be recognized, and I want to give myself a little room to enjoy it before my brain starts making a list of everything I still want to achieve.

Thank you to @incisaledgemagazine and @bencodental for including me, and to Creative Director @jeffreyampratwum as well as @thestylistnelly @mjgentle and @megtisch and the rest of the team for the creativity, encouragement, and intention they brought to this shoot.

From choosing the clothes to bringing all the minute details together, so much thought and skill went into the shoot. I’m grateful to have these photos to remember this experience and share with the people who have been cheering me on (though I’m still a bit disappointed I didn’t get to keep the shoes) 🙃

My hope is that we all get a little more comfortable enjoying the things we’ve worked for while we’re still in the middle of building a life. by @thedoctorjae

1) Avoidance can be disguised as ambition. At times, I have found myself working harder to avoid the discomfort of imposter syndrome.

2) I can have 99% of my day be amazing patient interactions but that 1 difficult patient or parent will live rent-free in my head for far too long.

3) I can think of 100+ different ways to spend $300K and all of my 20s that don’t involve dentistry. I sometimes wonder what would have happened if I explored another career.

4) Dentistry is a field of perfectionism. Millimeters and milligrams count. It’s hard to turn that off once you leave the office.

5) The overwhelming public shift towards distrust of our healthcare system is tough to contend with as a provider.

6) I once quit an office without another job in the pipeline. I was devastated at the time. It turned out to be one of the best things I ever did.

7) I sometimes forget to floss at night. 🫠

I naively thought I would have it all figured out once I finished residency. Now I’m realizing there’s no such thing - we are all just making it up as we go.

I have bigger hopes and dreams than I can fit into a single lifetime, but I’m excited to try to make as many of them happen as I can.

Recognition gives you permission to be seen. Not just by the people around you, but by yourself. And for a lot of us, that is the harder part.

Celebrating a win, however big or small, anchors you. It gives you something to come back to when the work gets hard, the doubt gets loud, or when you start questioning if any of it matters.

Let the win become the evidence, not just a moment you breezed past. by @thedoctorjae

I’m in the middle of a course for creating a keynote. I’m developing a talk about cultivating leadership with intention and making choices that support a fulfilling life.

I want someone to leave with something they can put to use in anything from a difficult conversation with a patient, apply to a decision they’re considering, or embody in how they lead a team. Developing this part of my work is something I’ve wanted to do for years and it’s finally coming together.

This is gonna be good.

When the email came about 40 under 40, my first instinct was to think about what’s next. Not sit with or celebrate it. Just filed it away and moved onto my next patient.

Then in the middle of my procedures, something I’ve done thousands of times, grounded me to that moment.

We are so conditioned to keep moving that, too often, we treat our own milestones like pit stops instead of places worth stopping to celebrate for a moment.

So before you ask what’s next, can you let yourself look back first? Follow for more reflections on leading with intention and claiming the life you’ve already built. by @thedoctorjae

Incisal Edge just named me as one of their 40 under 40 dentists. This is a big deal because sometimes the work doesn’t seem to go anywhere while you’re doing it.

You’re just in it, hoping and trusting that the small consistent efforts are building something, even if you aren’t yet seeing the results.

This recognition is proof that being consistent, dreaming big, and doing the seemingly small next thing actually pays off.

There’s never a zero percent chance. I genuinely believe that.

I can come up with a long list of reasons something went well before I consider including myself.

It’s easy to get so used to what we’re capable of that we stop recognizing it as progress

I’m sharing more here about noticing those changes and being deliberate about what comes next. Follow along if that’s something you’re working on too. by @thedoctorjae

I can spend a lot of time trying to find a way to say no that won’t disappoint anyone.

That means looking for a better explanation, or pushing another task to tomorrow, or giving up time I set aside to rest. It’s easy to overlook those commitments when I’m focused on being helpful.

Maybe we can give those plans a little more weight next time before agreeing to add something else. by @thedoctorjae

Sometimes we make the entry requirements for our own goals unnecessarily high.

Micromoments add up. I wonder what we’d already have underway if we have the time we actually have a little more credit. by @thedoctorjae

We can be quick to judge our efforts by what we’re able to do today, especially when we’re used to feeling capable. Learning something unfamiliar asks us to spend time in a place where the effort is real and the results are hard to see.

That’s what the idea of one percent better reminds me to make room for: the discomfort when we’re showing up consistently, giving our all and still wondering whether any of it even matters.

The day we finally can was built on all the days we kept showing up. by @thedoctorjae
