as a self-proclaimed documentarian, i wanted to learn more about spirituality.
christianity was a big part of my life, but i was curious about other forms of spirituality and religion .
so i went to the beltane fire festival in edinburgh and asked people why they were there.
just simple questions. why. what are you doing.
i met a taiwanese guy who said he was a witch.
also gay.
he let me stay with him.
we talked for hours.
maybe someone out there is into gay witches running naked in scotland.

Medical interventions. The return of American men from WWII provoked a shift in the language of sexuality. While mostly men were off fighting in the early 40’s, the landscape of America, both in terms of the workforce and demographics shifted. Women and immigrant men, with diverse cultural expressions of masculinity, took on roles traditionally reserved for American white men.

When the war ended, American men were bewildered with their demonted social positions, triggering a cultural moral panic and push towards conformity. Social institutions reinstate the patriarchy through the institutional policing of language surrounding sexuality and gender. Conspicuously, seven years post-war, the medical term “homosexual” was introduced to society by the American Psychiatric Association.

This introduction to label sexual discrepancy was a deliberate effort to penalize femininity, reestablish moral definitions of masculinity, and punish those deviating from traditional gender norms. The 1940s and 50s, not coincidentally, saw a surge in sexual-related medical procedures, including lobotomies and castrations. taken in Mental Asylum by @thedroneja
