Tomorrow marks 21 years since Hurricane Katrina forever changed New Orleans.

In the decades since, communities have worked to rebuild their lives and their city—and shown where government policies on disaster preparedness and response fail.

As climate change intensifies across the world, Black and other communities of color face increasingly severe disasters.

But Katrina’s own survivors, as well as climate journalists and environmental advocates, have lessons we can take to recover.

It’s been 21 years since Hurricane Katrina, a storm that took so much from so many and forever changed the lives of people across the Gulf Coast. For our Communications Manager, Bobbie, this anniversary is deeply personal. She survived Katrina, and the experience continues to shape how she sees community, recovery, and the work of making sure survivors feel seen and supported.

Her art piece from our Stolen Summers tour, created by the extraordinary @radicistudios, says it all “We lost everything, but not our love, belief in community, and determination to work for a better future for all.” taken in New Orleans, Louisiana by @theebeegees

Did you early vote? If not, you need to be at the polls on May 16, and every local election afterward.

Thank you to @congressmantroycarter @aodoms @aclu.louisiana @cityofnola @powercoej @nolacitycouncil and all our community leaders for pulling this together.

Learn more and find your polling place at powercoalition.org/vote, they are a great local resource for getting registered, breaking down sample ballots, and other voter registration needs!

We gotta show out for our collective liberation and empowerment. All of these problems root from the same stem of greed and enviromental disregard. Our elected officials would rather us give away free money than begin the deep and necessary work of system change out of this disposable reality that they rubber stamp. On Tuesday at 12:30pm, join us at City Hall to say “Yes!” to recycling expansion and “No!” to data center development in New Orleans. Together we fight back! Please sign the 🔗 in bio.

When:
12:30pm —> deliver “save New Orleans’ EPA SWIFR grant” petitions to the Mayor and City Council.
1:30pm —> go to council chambers to hear updates on “Interim Zoning District” from CPC and demand a moratorium on Data Centers in New Orleans.

Where:
In front of city hall. In council chambers.

🚨 A company called MS Solar Grid Data wants to build a data center in the Little Woods neighborhood of New Orleans East. We reject rising electricity bills, noise pollution, and false promises of economic development! Across the country, communities are fighting back and winning against data centers and Big Tech greed. Join us this Saturday for a community discussion and town hall on how we can get organized to stop the permit.

Bobbie Green didn’t just hear about Hurricane Katrina. She lived it.

“My family and I were displaced for 10 months. That’s 10 months in a whole other city, state. That’s 10 months being referred to as refugees when just a few days before evacuation, I had a home, a community, that was since ripped away,” writes Green for this issue of Peace & Riot.

That experience shaped how Green sees the world and ultimately set her on a path to becoming an organizer and advocate for environmental justice and community.

As the New Orleans Hub leader for Black Girl Environmentalist, Green’s work includes inspiring Black women, girls and gender expansive people to find their role within the climate movement:

“I am committed, as a younger organizer, to continuing to sponge up resources from climate leaders that look like me.”
