Our recent Trash 2 Treasure Workshops brought together young eco-leaders, families, and volunteers at Green Island, Education City — transforming everyday waste into works of art and inspiration. ♻️✨

Growing up, many of us learnt these Sanskrit words that place the Guru — the teacher — in a position of immense respect.

But as we honour our teachers, I often wonder: 𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫 — 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧?

At the Teacher’s Day celebration by Karnataka Sangha Qatar at the Indian Cultural Centre, I had the privilege of sharing my thoughts on teacher wellbeing and the 𝟑𝐒 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 — 𝐒𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐲. 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠. 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐠𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠.

Behind every lesson taught and every child encouraged is a human being who also needs to feel respected, supported and valued.

And watching the children radiate such joy through their beautiful dance dedicated to teachers brought one thought:

Let them touch the soil, follow an insect, collect a leaf, get their hands dirty and ask a hundred questions.

These little moments are learning too — perhaps some of the most important kind.

At Trash 2 Treasure, we believe sustainability education begins not only with knowing about the planet, but with feeling connected to it.

This trip to India wasn’t about places. It was about people, traditions, roots and the little moments that make home feel like home.

Rakhi threads tied with love. Mehendi-stained hands. Dressing up in traditions I grew up with. Laughter and precious time with family. ❤️

And then, the moments I treasure even more with every passing year — time with my parents. Walking through familiar fields, listening to familiar stories, and simply being present.

Life takes us across cities, countries and continents. We build lives far away, grow, change and keep moving forward. Yet coming home reminds us that some things remain beautifully unchanged.

Perhaps that is what Rakhi represents beyond the festival itself — the invisible threads that connect us to family, memories, belonging and our beginnings.

I came back with photographs, yes…
but also with a heart a little fuller. 🌿❤️

Picking something straight from a tree.

Chai with Mum, with nowhere to rush to.

Watching things grow.

Making something useful from something old.

Finding patterns in leaves, flowers on the table, and tiny surprises emerging from the earth.

Maybe I’m not discovering anything new.

𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗯𝗲 𝗜’𝗺 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲.

Growing. Making. Noticing.

Both captured through my lens.

🌿 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐈 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 — green fields, monsoon skies, fertile soil and nature thriving in all its abundance.

💔 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐞 — that very same land buried under plastic and waste.

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙢𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙚, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙣𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙡 𝙞𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙠!!!

We take pride in our farms, villages, landscapes and our deep connection with nature.

But that pride must also reflect in how we treat our surroundings.

India already has extraordinary natural beauty. We don’t need to create it — 𝐰𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐢𝐭. 🙏

Perhaps change begins with simple choices:
🌱 consuming less
🌱 refusing unnecessary single-use plastic
🌱 disposing responsibly, and
🌱 teaching our children that caring for public spaces matters just as much as caring for our homes.
