In a world where diet-culture rules the day, eating to support performance can feel much more complicated than it is. In this episode, Monica Van Winkle and Claire Sakura Swihart discuss ways to tune out the unhelpful noise about food and bodies, so you can become the embodied athlete you were born to be… in the body you’re in now.

A new episode of Mind Your Fitness is here!

In this episode @fueledandbalanced.dietitian and I are joined by Sports and Eating Disorder specialized Dietitian, @dietitian2dirtfarmer. Victoria has over 20 years of experience in clinical and sports dietetics specializing in the prevention and treatment of eating disorders in sports and the performing arts. She has built lasting programs and coached athletes of all kinds specializing in weight class sports and combat arts. She is an educator and new clinical coordinator for the Drexel University MS in Nutrition and Dietetics program. She is the co-creator of @theembodiedathlete.

In this clip Victoria references how there are SO many different types of metrics outside of body composition that can be used to assess how an athlete is responding to training or nutritional changes. Further, over-reliance of body composition analysis can unfortunately present harm to an athlete and eating disorder risk.

If you stand for kindness, building bridges, loving your neighbors, and providing resources for those with the highest need, please eat. Ask yourself, what is worth fighting for—and then feed that with all you’ve got.

Disembodiment can be restricting before Thanksgiving to “save room”, or exercising more than usual to “earn” your meal or “make up for it.” These patterns pull you out of your body and away from trust.

If this is you, what if you rewrote the playbook?

We fully support taking extra time to rest over the long weekend if your schedule permits. If you do have a workout the day after Thanksgiving—or a game, rehearsal, or practice coming up, pay attention to how your body feels.

Did you have more energy than usual?
Did your training or rehearsal feel less difficult? More enjoyable?

Now ask yourself: What did you do the day before that might have supported this?
-Meeting (or exceeding) your energy needs
-Catching up on sleep
-Being present with family or friends
-Truly enjoying your food, without hesitation

If applicable, take that data with you. Fueling, connection, and rest are not obstacles to training —they’re what make it possible. by @theembodiedathlete

“I believe everyone can be strong as hell, in their current body size and shape.” -
Annie Paladino

Grateful for @paladinostrength and other weight-inclusive strength coaches raising the standard of care for those of us who want to train for health and performance— and reminding us that we still get to have fun along the way.

Annie is beloved for creating a safe and welcoming space for all, for individualizing movement patterns, and encouraging folks to nourish themselves before during and after hard sessions! Tag your favorite weight-inclusive coach.

A combined 40 years of working in healthcare and athletics has taught us two things:

When issues of access are controlled for, intuitive eating and weight-inclusive medicine are the smartest and most sustainable ways to peak performance and health.

Our bodies don’t need to be fixed. Systems of power need to be fixed— the same systems that tell us what bodies belong and who has access to food and healthcare. We don’t need more Ozempic prescribed off label for weight loss.* We need more effort toward fixing
broken systems—so that everyone can access healthcare, food, and safe places to train and be in community.

Please share your favorite orgs working to level the playing field.

*There is research demonstrating the efficacy of GLP-1 use in type 2 diabetes, but these medications have not been extensively or effectively researched in weight loss. Long term outcomes are unknown at this time.

Numbers can be useful, but they don’t tell the full story. In this case, the numbers missed the story all together. Thankfully there is human intuition—it gave one deserving man a chance.

The body is a site of instinct and gut-feelings, and a powerful source of intel. Interoceptive awareness—a core concept of embodiment—is our ability to stay connected to and let these feelings be our guide.

Centering practices* like yoga, breathwork, and mindfulness can increase interoceptive awareness, helping us return to the wisdom in our bodies where there may be an over-reliance on data and metrics.
*For some—especially those with a history of trauma—these practices may not feel safe or accessible.
There are many pathways to embodiment. If these issues are impacting you, we encourage you to reach out to a trauma-informed professional who can help support you.

We celebrate and support liberation for all and this Juneteenth, we encourage all of us to continue learning more @intersectionalenvironmentalist — As conformity is demanded through oppressive tactics, access to healthcare, enough to eat, and personal safety are under threat. A rise in the prevalence of eating disorders is also a likely outcome. Bodies, food, and nutrition are political because policy decisions make it so. by @theembodiedathlete
