As you head into your week, a little food for thought: Natural elements engage involuntary attention—a state environmental psychologists call Soft Fascination. . We have been sharing information about the importance of soft fascination for a decade and we never tire of explaining it again–it is one of the most important things we can offer our brains. . And it is so easy to access. . Nature captures visual interest effortlessly without demanding deliberate concentration. . This gives the prefrontal cortex the necessary respite to replenish its inhibitory mechanisms. . Nature helps us. Always has. Always will. . Wanna know more? A flat canvas can capture nature, but it can never hold its textural presence and benefits. . Unlike a traditional painting that stays frozen in two dimensions, large-scale moss walls and oversized frames bring living texture right into your interior architecture. They aren’t static—they evolve across the day. . Morning sunlight pulls out vibrant emerald and chartreuse undertones, while late-afternoon raking light highlights the deep valleys and pillowy mounds of the moss. By nightfall, ambient spotlights turn the wall into an interplay of dramatic shadows and tactile, velvety depth. . Beyond the dynamic visual presence, verticalgreenery offers real functional benefits flat art simply can’t match: . Natural Acoustics: The multi-layered, organic topography naturally diffuses sound, softening echoes in rooms with high ceilings or hard flooring. . Biophilic Well-being: Bringing genuine botanical texture indoors measurably grounds a room, reducing ambient stress and creating an effortless connection to the outdoors (along with a myriad of physical and psychological benefits that you can read more about in our latest article, linked in profile). . Zero Upkeep: Dormant moss (that actually retains its anti microbial properties) delivers the restorative aesthetic of a living garden without irrigation, soil, or sunlight requirements. . It’s tactile, functional art that transforms how a space feels, sounds, and lives. . To be clear, we absolutely love all forms of art from paintings to sculptures and all things green, so moss interior design is very much a BOTH/AND. 💚🌳 . . . . . . . . . #biophilicinteriors #verticalgreenery #textureandlight #biophilia #texturalinteriors by @thefatplantsociety
Art that “breathes” with the room. Interior moss frames aren’t just static wall decor. They are actually an organic light dial. . Because of their rich, dimensional texture, the way you experience them changes continuously from morning to night. . In the soft glow of the morning, the subtle contours and deep greens slowly awaken. . By midday, direct natural light reveals the intricate layers and tactile topography of every cluster. . And when evening arrives, warm artificial lamps catch the ridges, casting dramatic, grounding shadows across the living texture. It’s form and biophilic design in constant dialogue with light. . Some people say the desert is “just brown” but they aren’t taking time to notice nature’s incredible details. . Biophilic design goes beyond living plants—it’s about tactile and visual connections to natural materials. . The Sonoran desert paints a gorgeous palette in a way that feels instantly soothing. . Swipe through to see how desert botanicals create a natural color palette you can bring indoors through lime wash, natural stone, textiles, and plant life. . . . . . . . . . #interiordesignpalette #interiorcolor #naturalinteriors #wellbeingdesign #naturesoothes by @thefatplantsociety
Using the sights & sounds of the desert to illustrate the key biophilic design frameworks: . Stephen Kellert (biophilia pioneer)brilliantly translated humanity’s evolutionary affinity for the natural world into actionable architectural principles. . 1. Organic / Naturalistic Dimension: Shapes, forms, and sensory experiences in the built environment that directly, indirectly, or symbolically reflect nature. . 2. Place-Based / Vernacular Dimension: Buildings, landscapes, and structures that root themselves in the distinct geography, culture, ecology, and climate of a specific location. . Desert architecture and design are often exemplary of Stephen Kellert’s biophilic framework because the designs pay homage to the desert itself. . Heading to the desert this week which is, iwhere so much of The Fat Plant Society was “born” in terms of inspiration. . We both adore the desert and desert plants and it was in the Valley that we first saw vertical plant walls in person for the first time. . And yes, we sure tried to replicate that plant experience here in Kansas City—our first vertical designs were created using succulents. But we just don’t get enough sun here. . Enter moss. Wonderfully sustainable and sturdy. . But this week, we’ll be paying homage to the desert and the inspiration it has always provided. . . . . . . . . . #sonorandesertlife #agavelovers #sustainabledesigns #biophilicinteriors #organicarchitecture by @thefatplantsociety
Mother Nature’s favorite shape? The hexagon. See, nature relies on the hexagon for one simple reason: It is the most efficient structural shape in the universe. . Hexagons interlock seamlessly without leaving any empty space, maximizing coverage using the least amount of material and energy. . That’s exactly why we love to use hexagonal patterns for our moss frames and full-scale green walls: . •Modular Flexibility: Arrange them as standalone statement pieces or honeycomb them together to create an expansive, living wall feature. . •Organic Harmony: The combination of natural textures with sacred geometry brings a grounding, biophilic feel into any interior space. . •Endless Composition: Play with different moss colors, depths, and tile layouts to build a design that feels entirely custom. . Bringing the intelligence of natural design straight to your interior. It not only looks good, it feels good. . . . . . . . . . #biophilicdesign #hexagons #sacredgeometry #natureinarchitecture #botanicalartlovers by @thefatplantsociety

So, we’ve got educational environments on the brain after a great Saturday @limestonecommunityschool (thank you to everyone The Limestone Community School and everyone who attended). . Did you know that looking up at greenery directly influences our cognitive performance and reduces stress? . Introducing greenery to an environment reduces feelings of tension and anxiety by around 37%, and anger by 44%. . Here’s why—because we are all hard wired for nature and moss walls provide soft fascination, in just 30 seconds of looking up at a moss wall, your blood pressure drops , within 40 seconds, your cortisol levels drop, and your attention and focus is restored. . Pretty great inclusion for all educational environments, huh? . Plus, since the moss is dormant, you don’t need to water or mist it. Ever. Green for at least 10 years and counting. . . . . . . . . . #greenwalls #educationdesign #schooldesign #designwellness #biophilic_design by @thefatplantsociety
