It’s that time of the year! The weather is cooling down, and there’s no reason anymore to keep the funk indoors. Come get down with us at Focus on the Funk, our fall park jam sessions for funk lovers and dancers, at Ellsworth Park in Silver Spring. (December 6 session expected to be held at @UrbanArtistryDC unless weather permits.) by @thefourthchakra

© Maryland State Arts Council 2026, MSAC.org. (Footage from my folklife apprenticeship with Future.) Ryan "Future" Webb is an internationally-known artist, specializing in multiple street dance styles, such as Popping, Locking, and Memphis Jookin. As an artist, he is most known for his unique Tutting styles, seamless mixing of styles, and his victory as the only American team to win the largest street dance battle, Juste Debout. As a tradition bearer, he is most known for his 20+ years of international instruction, including at his home school, @urbanartistrydc, and the @funkinfocus online education program; event organizing, particularly @thebookofstyles_ international popping battle; and preservation work (footage library and extensive interviews of OGs). And as for me? He is a mentor, teacher, and friend. by @thefourthchakra

© Maryland State Arts Council 2026, MSAC.org. Footage from the Folklife Apprenticeship with Future and Leo. "The Book of Styles was the first popping contest in the world that separated the substyles,” remarks Future during his interview with MD Arts Council. “With BOS, we have been successful honoring legacy and diversity of the styles, and helping people remember the names and who contributed to them…” The 2026 BOS Finals is going down, October 10th, in Wheaton, Maryland at Urban Artistry! The BOS Finals are held in the DMV every year after the Northwest qualifier, in Seattle, WA, and Asia qualifier in China take place. This popping battle creates opportunities for dancers to dive deep into one style, and then to explore mixing multiple. @thebookofstyles_ @urbanartistrydc @funkinfocus @mdartscouncil by @thefourthchakra
