Just listed: 4100 Madelia Avenue, a 1951 mid-century up a long driveway in the Sherman Oaks foothills, wood-clad siding under mature trees. The living room rises two stories under clerestory windows, with maple floors, a fireplace and a step-down dining room beside it. In 1990 architect Ruben Ojeda remodeled the house and added a second-floor primary suite under pitched, beamed ceilings and a bank of windows onto the view; the pool went in the same year. The siding was stripped and resealed by The Pink Painter; a Los Angeles painting firm of that name traces its start to West 12th Street in New York, where Bill Suplee founded it. Stairs around the corner run down to Ventura Boulevard.

Entrada Road leaves Topanga Canyon Boulevard just past the post office, climbs about a mile of pavement, and stops at a gate. Behind the gate is Topanga State Park, eleven thousand acres of it. This single story house from 1964 sits along that road.

Inside, the original wood paneling is still up, the ceilings are open to their beams, and glass runs floor to ceiling across the main rooms. A two sided wood burning fireplace serves the living room on one face and the dining area on the other. Four bedrooms and two remodeled baths run off one hall, and two of those bedrooms are separated by a wooden accordion partition that folds back into a single long room. The primary opens to the back yard through sliding glass. Outside there are flat pads, mountain views and an attached carport.

The gate at the top of the road is Trippet Ranch. Cora Trippet bought the land in 1917 and called it Rancho Las Lomas Celestiales, the ranch of heavenly hills. Her son hired the Los Angeles architect Sumner Spaulding, who did the Catalina Casino and later Case Study House No. 2, to build the superintendent's house, the stables and a lodge for skeet shooting. That lodge is the park nature center now.

Just listed: a 1974 post-and-beam on an acre in Horizon Hills, entered through a slab door carved in deep relief by James Hubbell and set with three lozenges of red glass over a forged handle. Hubbell trained in sculpture at Cranbrook and studied glass at Chartres, and his carved restaurant doors were drawing notice in the same decade this one was hung.

The living room steps down from the entry court, where a ficus grows out of a bed cut into the saltillo tile. Exposed beams, a tongue and groove ceiling, wood-framed glass on three sides, and a rubble stone chimney carried the full height of the room. Four bedrooms, three baths, two fireplaces, a black-bottom pool set among boulders, a bocce court, and an orchard on ground the county still zones for agriculture.
