Who am I? Hey I am Ella! I am a Multidisciplinary Artist, Choreographer, Movement Specialist, Accredited Coach, Certified Rolfer, Published Author, & Director of Ella Mesma Company. People often read me as white, though I'm of mixed Nigerian & white British heritage on my Mother's side, white British on my father's, and I believe true spiritual work means being aware of our privileges, examining our bias & the problems that colonialism & patriarchy create... and creating, and paving the way for change with that awareness. I believe in having awareness of our impact on our planet (& humans) to create lasting change... not only for ourselves, or this generation, but for collective liberation and for future generations. As a coach & a creative, my work centres on unlearning to return to our authentic selves, on transformation, on wellbeing, & on storytelling: particularly putting the stories I wished I'd seen growing up on stage. At 14, I discovered salsa, then Afro-Brazilian dance forms, initially learning with a Yoruban priest in Salvador da Bahia at 22 & then I got very into samba, parading in carnival in Rio as a passista back in 2005. My contemporary dance training in Leeds led me to formal dance training at 25 in London. Performance highlights include Russell Maliphant Company, Lea Anderson (The Chomondeleys), & the Olympics Opening Ceremony. Ella Mesma Company has performed worldwide, with commissions from Sadler's Wells, Manchester International Festival & the Place. Like many, I struggle with belonging, self-doubt & finding my authority. Dance holds magic but also challenge... scarcity, self-sabotage & conflict. Self-work... training as a yoga teacher, in bodywork practices, as a coach & in alchemy, transformed everything. I'm still deeply grateful for the practices that inform my work. Having navigated (and continuing to journey) my own questions around identity, sexuality, self, I'm committed to supporting others of multiple heritages & to being an LGBTQIA+ ally. What do you think? Here is a little guided visualisation journey I have been playing with using some of my footage from Colombia (and a little help from Pixabay (thank you!) ❤️) In Butoh classes with @karavanensemble I used to love exploring the perspectives of moving whilst walking & embodying different genders, and then falling forwards while walking as the embodiment of children… I have had a lot of problems this year (well actually all of my life) on the right side of my body, and having sessions of Integrated Awareness with @lisbonhealing have been exploring how that connects to my fear of letting go control & trusting the masculine (as well as other things) Recently @ahmad.jooma has been falling forwards as we walk uphill to be easier on the body and again I have been reminded of this Butoh exercise of falling forwards… And in turn of the state of innocence… Just as the falling forwards exercise in Butoh represents childlike awe and wonder, so too, the awe and wonder of the state of innocence has a surrender to it: I liken it to my letting go of control and trying to fix myself, others and the world which I realise frees me up to create with a full heart, and to surrender to the magic that occurs when we collaborate with & surrender to the universe ❤️ This for me is the Goddxx-like potential: it is who we are outside of our identity. It transcends the polarity of male and female, which transcends gender, and all earthly binaries. It is our highest self, our genius, our superconscious, our soul truth. who we are outside of our identity.
